Distended Abdomen?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was just less than a week ago. All is well, and no pain or discomfort at this point, but my abdomen is seriously distended. I look like I'm about 8 months pregnant. If I had to guess, I'd say this is Fluid, but I wonder if anyone else had this experience, and how long it took to go away. Did you have to do anything to get rid of the swelling?

My stomach is just now getting back to size (6 wks out)

thank goodness, i truly thought i was a freak. i was lying on the bed last night, and my belly is sticking up like i'm pregnant. i mean, it usually flattens out when i lie down, but not today.

i think it is all of this gas that i have been having...man...

I think it's definetly gas and or fluids. My husband was noticing my stomach and said it looks a bit bigger. And it shows by the scale; I was up four pounds right after surgery and it's certainly not due to food this time!

I'm a month out and still looking distended; I think it has to do with the location of the port. Mine is dead center. Also at my first post-surgery check-up my doctor drained some Fluid from by abdomen to give me a "head-start" before I was back on my Water pill.

There are a couple of things about this experience that remind me of being pregnant -- and it's been more than 23 years since the last time I was pregnant! :) But besides the pumped up belly, the port feels like a baby's foot pushing against the inside of my abdomen. :D

Yep, probably the gas. I watched a video of a procedure being done and I was amazed to watch the surgeons go in and fill the entire abdominal cavity with air just before starting the procedure...the stomach blew up like a balloon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
