Return to Work after Surgery

Recommended Posts

I've kept my coworkers and boss in the loop all during the last year as I jumped through all the hoops. They've all been very supportive. I'm expecting to take 3 weeks off work.

I'm also pre-op and have this question. I plan on taking a week or a week and a half of vacation, then go back to work. I have excellent disability and FMLA but honestly I don't want the questions and I don't plan to tell people I have weight loss surgery. The people judging me for taking the easy way out...arghhhh. Just going to say I am eating less and moving more, which is the truth.

Don't mind people who say that you are taking the easy way out. Going under anesthesia and all the test and planning is not the easy way out. I am going to strut into work with no high blood pressure, no prediabetic like I was on the runway at a NYC fashion show.

I took 4 weeks off after my gastric bypass. I was happy to have the time, but probably could have gone back after three weeks.

Hi, I converted from lapband to bypass in one stage on Wednesday May 1. I spent 2 nights in hospital. I have a desk job and did some very light work from home the next Monday and Tuesday. I went back to the office Thursday for a half day (8 days later). But I was not very effective!
In retrospect, I should have waited until the next Monday (12 days). It has now been 15 days and I don’t think I am quite 100%. I get tired quickly (maybe because the very low calories). But I have a flexible job and it’s ok that I didn’t come back 100%...if I don’t feel well I head home.
So, if I didn’t have that luxury I would say I would have come back next Monday (19 days).
Hope this helps.
Stella

My case was a little different. When I had my sleeve done I also had a hernia repair that took 6 weeks to heal. Been back at work for 2 weeks now. I was told usually someone can go back 2 weeks after the surgery.

Hello, I’m currently in my pre-op phase and wanted to know how long were some of you out of work while recovering from surgery?

Thanks!
I got my all clear, today.
My surgeon's nurse recommended anywhere from 4- 6 weeks. So I am going with 4 weeks. Hope this helps.

I took 2 weeks off but for me, I had no pain at all 4 days after surgery so I went back to work the following week. (1 week off). I do have a office job so no heavy lifting or anything. I think it all depends on what type of job you have.

For me. I work with dogs and animals all day on my feet and active. Bending and stooping and going up ladders as well. I am taking at least 6 weeks off. Last thing i want is a hernia or end up doing something that i could have prevented

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
