Return to Work after Surgery

Recommended Posts

I took 2 weeks but had surgery on 5/13 and honestly could go back this Monday 5/20!!! Just a little pain in my stomach in the incisions and when I sneeze.. I’m chillin til 5/28 and then go back. It’s more of an individual thing based on pain and the type of job u have.. Good Luck to everyone!!!

I was off 2.5 weeks but then developed an ulcer and needed some time off for the endoscopy. And then I almost immediately had my gallbladder go, and needed another 2 weeks off from that. O__O Fill out an FMLA form just in case.

I'm pre-op for vsg and my doctor told me plan on two weeks. I'm going to see how I feel after one week and take it from there.

My job is off and on labor intensive so I have to see what my schedule is like. If it's an office week it should be ok for me.

That said, if you had the PTO to cover it and/or the time and benefits available, I think I'd take the max.

Some say it's easier than healing from a C-section. I was up taking walks around my neighborhood by 1.5-2 weeks with that. I feel like it took me about 3-4 weeks to feel like a real functioning human and like 8+ weeks before I felt like my old self.

Good luck on your journey.

I did 4 weeks so that I was close to the toilet until my body was adjusted to everything and it was the perfect amount of time to see what I could and could not tolerate as far as foods and what would put me in the bathroom. It really is a personal decision but I think your body needs that to recover from a major surgery. I also know it depends on how much your covered financially for missing work. I only got paid 70% while I was out, but it was worth it to come back to work and know that I wouldn’t have to run to the bathroom and have a routine on my meals.

I am off of work for 2 weeks, but then on light duty for another 6 weeks. I work on the admission ward of a psych hospital on a forensic unit, and have to be prepared to deal with assaultive patients. My best friend took 6 weeks total off of full duty at work, and the day she got back she was kicked in the stomach.

There is no “right” answer to how long you should take off work. It very much depends on the activity level of your job.

Each of us has a unique situation and set of circumstances. I have a sedentary job and went back after two weeks. I walk to work, about five blocks, which was exhausting a couple of times. That being said, if I was 20 or 30 years younger, I think I may have had a bit more energy and pep in my step! I felt physically fine after two weeks, but low energy. Good luck to you on your journey!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
