GERD before and after sleeve

Recommended Posts

For those of you who have gerd prior to sleeve procedure, just wondering how your gerd symptoms are after the sleeve procedure. I take prevacid daily and it's well under control. I do no want to have gastric bypass which is what is recommended sometimes if you have gerd. I've read where it's not such a problem for some people. Comments are appreciated

I had GERD before, and still have it. I also just had one 15mg pill daily, and it's controlled. I am still having success with just one pill a day. The acid reflux hasn't worsened or gotten better since my sleeve.

Thx so much. Sounds like it should be tolerable. I take 30mg prevacid, can even skip a day sometimes

I had GERD before my sleeve. Had a long talk with my surgeon and we felt that sleeve was a reasonable risk even in the presence of pre-existing GERD. About a month after my surgery, I started getting heartburn. I take 20mg Nexium every day and it seems to keep the heartburn at bay, but I do have some nighttime reflux. Not anything severe, I wake up with a sore throat. My GI doc is following me and we are weighing options, preferably ones that would avoid bypass.

eeeeeek, hold your horses☺️

i am going to play devils advocate

I never had any gerd pre-op to sleeve - so reflux never an issue for me

reading the boards you will see many OP that had gerd, or never had it before -

and gerd become unbearable PO sleeve

there are OP on the board that have revisions (ie to gastric bypass) to get rid

of/improve their gerd problem - hopefully you will hear good/bad stories concerning

the gerd/reflux with the sleeve

i don't have stats - but in my opinion concerning reflux/sleeve - owner beware

I am so happy with my sleeve these past 7+ years - it is a great choice☺️

but talk to your doc again about sleeve vs bypass involving reflux

hmmmm, hope i didn't scare you about sleeve, its wonderful, just putting

"it" all on the table for you and OP☺️

good luck with your decision

kathy

I had GERD before and still do afterwords. I actually was just given permission to come off my omeprazole to see if I even need it. I don't have any GERD symptoms daily except if I eat an hour before bed I'll wake up in the middle of the night spitting up. But I don't have heart burn or reflux other then that after I had my sleeve.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
