Birth Control Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Hi ladies! Has anyone had any experiences with getting the depo shot post-surgery? My surgery was Nov. 23rd, 2018. I'm terrified of the weight gain aspect and I was thinking of switching to the patch instead. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank-you.

I had taken Depo in the past (before surgery) and it never caused me to gain weight. But six months post surgery I chose the Mirena IUD as my birth control. I have not gained weight from it or had any issues whatsoever. It works great for me!

I was on Depo on and off for years. I loved it. I gained weight while on it, but my lifestyle changed during that time, so can't pin the weight gain on Depo.

But I decided to go off it permanently due to the effects on bone density.

Just prior to WLS I also switched to the Mirena IUD, and have been very happy with it for the last year.

That's why I chose not to do Depo again too! The loss of bone density with continued use. Thank goodness we have options - and good ones at that.

I was on Depo for a few years in my 20s. I gained weight while using it, but I don't know for certain that it was related to the shot. I also stopped due to the bone density concerns, especially since my mom was diagnosed with osteopenia around the same time.

At the time of my second c-section I had a tubal, so that's been my birth control since surgery. I think I'm going to have to get either an endometrial ablation or the Mirena IUD again, though, because my bleeding has been really excessive since I lost weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
