Disappointing outcome

Recommended Posts

I stepped away from this forum after my failed surgery attempt. I Was supposed to have gastric bypass March 27th. The doctor wasn’t able to complete the surgery due to past adhesions from a hysterectomy. It was unexpected so we had never discussed the sleeve as an alternative. I’m in the process of seeing if I can get the sleeve surgery approved but who knows. I wanted to say tell your doctor you are open to the other surgery just in case. I am so mad he did not ask and I did not say anything. I thought about it but I really wanted the bypass and he didn’t seem concerned. It’s a horrible feeling to wake up from surgery and find out nothing was done!

That's a shame. I just would have assumed they'd go ahead with "something" after they had you all prepped and ready but I guess for liability concerns they can't just do that. Good luck with your new surgery.

That’s horrible. Who would have thought that a previous unrelated surgery could cause such a problem. Good luck moving forward

That must have been devastating. Many prayers that this time around everything goes smoothly :100_pray:

Just wanted to update that I went back and was able to get the sleeve May 1. I didn’t post earlier because I really felt there would be another reason the surgery could not be completed. I’m happily at home and pain of that last failed surgery has faded. So if for some reason you can’t get the surgery you want, don’t give up. I’m glad I tried again

So glad you were able to get the sleeve. Congratulations!

If you don't mind my asking, was your hysterectomy open or done laproscopically? Asking because I am scheduled for RNY soon and had a total hysterectomy also. Your original post actually concerned me enough that I had asked my surgeon about it before this update. He was not concerned, but I sure have been! :)

I had an open hysterectomy. My doctor said mine was a fluke and he has never had the problem before. If something bizarre or unusual is going to happen, it will happen to me every time. I asked him about scar tissue multiple times prior to surgery. I wish I had told him to do the sleeve if he couldn’t do the bypass. But I really wanted the bypass and didn’t want to put the thought in his head.

You are welcome and thank you for the kind words. I’m sure your surgery will not have the same outcome as mine. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
