MIZ60 1,291 Posted April 10, 2019 (edited) As a nurse/nurse practitioner for the past 38 years, it is appalling to me that any nurse treat a patient this way in any situation. I recommend thorough documentation of everything that occurred as well as a statement written by your mother and any other witnesses. This should go straight to the hospital administrator and director of nursing as well as any type of patient advocate. Additionally, I would recommend making a formal complaint to the state board of nursing in whatever state you had surgery in since this level of behavior is inexcusable and violates every professional standard I have ever heard of. I know the state board here in Texas takes consumer complaints VERY seriously and this "nurse" needs consequences. They went home and I took a nap and when I woke up my nurse was standing by my bed putting syringes into my iv and she asked me if the people that visited me were related to me and I told her they're my mom and friend. She started telling me how much she hated the islamic hijab and what it stands for and how she liked other religions veils but not the islamic one. Later, she became incredibly rude and aggressive with me. She was trying to show me how to give myself the blood thinner injection that i'm supposed to take when I go home. She put it in my hand and told me to do it now. I told her to give me a second because I had just woken up and was feeling groggy but she started telling me not to be a coward and to do it now. I told her ok I'm gonna do it just give me 1 second to breathe but she grabbed my hand and pushed the needle into me against my will. Later, she told me she would go to lunch for 30 mins and come back to help me walk. I waited for an hour and a half and when she didn't come me and my mom, who had just arrived, went to walk by ourselves. We had walked for half an hour and just got back to my room when the nurse came back and started yelling at me and my mom because she thought I hadn't walked and have been waiting for her the whole time. I told her I just got back from walking but she didn't believe me and was yelling at my mom and saying that my mom is going to be the death of me because of how much she spoils me and doesn't make me do stuff and my mom was telling her that we just walked but the nurse wouldn't have it and kept on going and saying that it's all my moms fault and she can't trust her to take care of me at home and she started trying to pull me up from my chair to walk and I told her I couldnt i just walked and im in a lot of pain now and she started yelling at me and I was crying and telling her i cant and that my stomach and back and arm hurt a lot and she would keep telling me to stop crying and get up and that I'm too lazy. She made me get up and walk and after that I asked to be discharged right away and I left that day. Every time I remember that nurse I get so mad at what happened and wish I could've done something. Am I right to be mad? Any suggestions on what I should do? As an RN myself, this infuriates me! We have to take courses for cultural diversity in the nursing program. She needs to be reported because she is NOT holding up the oath we take when we graduate from nursing school. I'm sorry you went through this and I'm embarrassed for the nursing profession as a whole. We are NOT all like that. Hugs and I hope you heal well. Might not be a bad idea to talk to your surgeon about the nurse's behavior. I say this because surgeons have a great deal of pull within the hospital system and he/she may be more likely to get something done about this. At the very least, you deserve an apology and the hospital needs to provide cultural diversity education for their staff but I think this nurse needs to find a new profession. 4 1 Dabeyhive, Bari_KS, FluffySaysForkIt! and 2 others reacted to this

april042019 105 Posted April 13, 2019 (edited) Thank you for all your kind words and suggestions! I didn't say anything at the time because I was scared and I normally have a lot of anxiety and with the surgery I didn't know right from left but I will be speaking to the hospital very soon about all of it. Again, thank you all. ❤️❤️ 😘 Edited April 13, 2019 by april042019 2 1 FluffySaysForkIt!, thatch and LearningToLoveMeAgain reacted to this

Emilia DD 39 Posted April 16, 2019 You need to stand up for yourself, your family and your faith. This nurse behavior is totally unacceptable and she should know better. I’m an RN and I would like to apologize to you. Nursing professional values do not reflect in this one individual’s behavior. You deserve respect, compassion and professionalism. I hope you and your loved ones will get better care going forward.

SusieQ2019 567 Posted April 16, 2019 Agree with you @Dabeyhive and in some cultures people are taught to be respectful to people in authority and in some cases people are just not confrontational and do not know how to deal or handle conflicts. 2 1 1 Dabeyhive, april042019, Aprilgal and 1 other reacted to this
Aprilgal 91 Posted April 19, 2019 As a person of color whenever, situations like these occur (so sorry you had to deal with this when in so much pain and just in general) - in your mind you are always debating whether or not you should say something and how will it be received. Will other people see your side of the story or will they say you are blowing events out of proportion? It is even worse when you are ill. Don't assume that everyone has your privilege or your temperament (to the person who thinks this is a hoax). Lastly racist or xenophobic or big ass bullies need to be put in their place. I hope everything with your report goes smoothly and disciplinary action is taken. I also hope you are healing up well. 1 1 april042019 and TheJuice202 reacted to this

KateBruin 344 Posted April 19, 2019 As a patient you are extremely vulnerable. You rely on staff for nearly everything immediately post op. Many, many patients and family members have trouble advocating for themselves or a loved one. It doesn’t make her story a lie. I had a nurse force me to wet me bed when I could not walk after breaking my back but was past the catheter stage. There are bad nurses. Lazy nurses, racist nurses. Please report her. Go to the state RN board if you need to. She has no right interacting with patients until she gets further sensitivity training. 1 april042019 reacted to this
