New discovery: Can't handle rich foods

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I just hosted a party for my birthday last weekend and realized that I just cannot tolerate rich food anymore. I am almost 4 months post-op and haven't been eating rich food at all, and tried a couple of bites of party food (burger, mac n cheese, cake) here and there, none of which agreed with me. It felt like my esophagus was mad at me for even trying! I've been really good and keeping up my high-protein diet but figured I would make an exception for my birthday, but boy was I wrong.

Has anyone else experimented with eating "treat" food for holidays/special occasions with success? Or is this an extension of food addiction thinking that got me so overweight in the first place?

I'm four months post-op also (on the 11th) and haven't tried cake or mac and cheese yet. I have had a McDonalds cheeseburger on bread and it went down okay. And homemade hamburgers without bread work okay. But there are still some foods that I can't eat like soft tortillas, some breads, roast beef, and such. I'm afraid to try "treat" foods because I don't want to get back on that bad track like I was pre-surgery that made me obese to begin with.

I don’t eat too many sweets such as cake etc so I don’t know how those will affect me. But I did try bbq ribs about a month ago(I’m 4 months out) and they didn’t agree with me at all. Massive heart burn and my stomach felt like it was going to explode. I only ate 2 ribs.

My stomach cant handle greasy food at all. I tried a cheeseburger sans bun a while back and it was bad news bears. Maybe a few French fries but other than that I stay away from fried items. I was telling my husband (as we sat in our favorite Mexican joint) that it was lucky for me that corn chips were NOT a slider food and I can only do about 7-10 chips before I have to stop. Preop I used to be able to eat chips and salsa until it would about kill me.

Sure. And as your tool matures, you will be better able to tolerate rich, calorie dense foods (sadly). :( But in saying that, every time I disobey my pouch, I feel like crap. So nauseated I have to lay down and pray to die young. But as the months go buy, I can eat some things that I couldn't in the early days -- in small quantities. But I do prefer "clean" lower-ish fat stuff these days. Makes me feel better after eating it.

Sorry you had that experience! Happy belated birthday!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
