2 1/2 Weeks Post-op food intake

Recommended Posts

I had gastric bypass on 3/19 and I am about 2 1/2 weeks post-op. My first two weeks after surgery I was on a full liquid diet. I moved on to the next phase of my programs diet on Tuesday. We do not do puréed food at all but move directly to solid Proteins. Before switching I was struggling with knowing when I was full or hungry. Once switching to solids I can for the most part tell when I should stop eating. For most foods I can eat about 2 oz. However, tonight I had some homemade chili for dinner and I was able to eat a cup worth of chili. I’m not sure if it was because it was a liquid and had small bits of Beans and hamburger but after I ate it I was shocked how much I ended up eating. I feel like sometimes I don’t have any restriction to my new stomach. How much are you able to eat at 3 weeks post-op?

Do you have any guidelines from your nutritionist for how much you should be eating at 3 weeks post op? I was told my pouch would hold about 1/4 cup at that stage so I measured out exactly that much. Sometimes I could eat it and sometimes I couldn't. At 6 months out, I still measure and weigh all my food to make sure I have a healthy portion not an "as much as I can eat portion." I've never challenged my pouch to see how much it can hold. As you start to eat more dense Proteins you will feel restriction and know when you are full. You will begin to recognize the cues that one more bite is too much! For me, it's a runny nose. It can be very uncomfortable to eat too fast or too much. It only took me a couple of times to do that to get the message that just because I wanted to and probably could eat more doesn't mean I should. That's what got me to the "Bariatric Ball" in the first place! Also, at this stage it's a trial and error kind of effort. Your pouch is still healing and some things you will not be able to eat for a while but will be able to later. Hang in there. It does get easier and is so worth it! Even at your stage now, you may not meet you Protein goals yet. Try not to worry too much about it. Give it your best effort and you will get there soon!

chili has a lot of liquid that just slides right through. Only eat what you're supposed to eat, even if you don't feel "full".

I will make two weeks tomorrow and still not even on mushy foods which we do but they gave me four weeks liquid and I am miserable. I miss eating food and I am literally just getting by on Water, popsicles, I miss having hot stuff. I wish I could go into solid Proteins.

Can’t you have broth? Broth was one of my favorite things when I was on liquids. It felt so soothing to my stomach.

Try hot chicken broth. It felt good to eat something hot. I added salt and pepper to low sodium broth.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
