Protein and Water Intake

Recommended Posts

I had gastric sleeve done on 3/18/19. I am having a hard time getting in the 60 grams of Protein and 64 Oz of Water daily. I'm supposed to be on pureed foods. I still have to do liquids a lot though. I'm trying really hard but I can only get so much liquid or food down before my stomach gets upset or I vomit it back up. Is this common right after surgery? Has anyone else had the same problems? Any tip or tricks to meeting my daily requirements? Thank you!!

It's okay to stay on liquids a little bit longer. Are you possibly eating/drinking too fast? Is it vomiting the food or is "the foamie?" Foamy mucus means your body isn't ready for whatever it is you're eating.

Maybe change the temperature of what you're drinking. I just had surgery 9 days ago and my new petite pouch prefers room temp or warm to really cold drinks. Good luck!

So as a Sleeve post-op, I noticed that small amounts, carefully measured eaten at timed intervals helps a lot. For example, at my "food" I eat one bite and wait 4-5 minutes before the next one. and my liquids are in containers where I eyeball how much I'm drinking at a time. This has helped me as I was a fast eater before the surgery.

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even Water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I also found a new drink Bai which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot Drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.

The Fluid requirement is met by a combination. It is not only the water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your Vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the Protein Shakes. It is the water component of the Soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and Decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day.

I usually throw up some of the food and some white foam with it. I think it could be me trying to eat too fast. I was a fast eater also. I just want to eat and get it over with lol. Also my Dr reminded me not to try to eat more than 2 Oz at a time. This could be the problem too. I love buying Crystal lite packets for my Water also. I've been getting about 50 Oz of just water in the last couple days so it's progress. Thank you so much for your comments and help! 😊 I know it's gonna take a while for me to adjust.

My surgeon prepared me that my Protein and Water intake were GOALS and not something I’d be able to achieve right away. Of the two he was more concerned about liquids. Just take it slow. You’ll get there 👍🏻

That is eating too fast. Try the timed eating, it helps immensely. Get measuring spoons and cups to measure it perfectly.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
