New here looking for advice

Recommended Posts

Hello I’m sue and I’m 47 have fought with ups and downs of diets and ended gaining the weight back once I stopped the pills. powders. Whatever I was trying at the time

I started this journey in August 2018 and this is my surgery month. I have been cleared by all my doctors cardiologist neurologist psychiatrist general dr. You name it. Plus. I have stopped smoking because of this ( needs to) I’m not exactly scared. But more nervous. I still can’t loose weight. And it’s hard. Really when your obiese it’s hard to do just about anything. I do walk my dogs probably 8 or more times a day for about 15 minutes and found on YouTube some exercises for elderly people because they don’t push you so much I’m looking for advice on how to overcome the weight thing. And looking for some friends on here to chat with and cheer each other on Anxious I’m ct

Hi Sue. I'm new, too. :)

My surgery is on 18 April. I'm excited and nervous at the same time, probably very similar to how you're feeling. You mentioned not being able to lose weight - has your surgeon put you on a pre-op diet? Mine has; I had to start it four weeks pre-op. I have two weeks to go... If you have been prescribed a pre-op diet this should help you shift some weight before your surgery. Are you weighing yourself on the same set of scales each time, and at the same time of day? Are you keeping a food diary? What kinds of things are you eating for your meals, and do you have structured meals as opposed to just eating whenever?

I don't do any other exercise at present other than 3 x 20 minute walks per week. This seems to be working for me - I don't get too tired, but I push myself hard enough in that 20 minutes that I am puffing and breaking a good sweat. The nurse looking after me through this process tells me that this is enough.

Nice to meet you Sue :)

Hello mearas. Nice to meet you

I do keep a journal

I saw the neurologist today ( I’m under stroke precaution ) she warned me about the risk. And I agreed and said if the next stroke puts me in a chair. Who wants the job of lifting me no one. She agreed

I keep a meal diary. I haven’t been put on the pre op diet yet Which is what I’m waiting for maybe the dr office will call tomorrow for a visit. Crossing fingers. It feels like I have waited soooo long for this opportunity for a new life. It will be an adjustment but I can do it.

Well, Sue - the good thing about this surgery is that you will lose weight, which will in turn reduce your stroke risk. So that's a positive right there. It's good that you keep a food diary because it can show you where you might be falling into traps, or old behaviours and habits.

I think you will feel better about it once you get put on your pre-op diet. It makes it feel a bit more real, and you will lose weight on your pre-op diet! It'd be impossible not to; the average adult female needs around 2,000 calories per day for survival. Eating 1,600 or less will cause you to lose weight. My pre-op diet is around 1,000 calories per day - the bulk of which is Protein. I never would have thought it possible but in the last week I lost 3.1kg (6.8 lbs) just sticking to my pre-op diet. So I firmly believe it will happen for you.

It certainly will be an adjustment, but you absolutely can do it :)

Good for you who in Mexico?. I'm researching Tijuana Bariatric Center with Dr Garcia. I was scheduled for this week. Then decided to wait and see if I can LOSE the 35# with weight watchers . At the end of April if I haven't lost 10 lb I'm seriously looking into the sleeve again sick of being fat. Good luck

So I can’t figure out this site. I want to add May surgery to the line up. I’m going for the by-pass on May 1. I’m doing the pre op diet now and it’s not that bad. I started this journey at 229 lbs and am at 190 now. Hoping to loose 6-10 pounds before surgery. Which can’t be hard. I exercise with YouTube and walking my dachshund pups who keep me active
Insurance is approved and wow this is really happening. Can’t believe it. I’m so excited for this I am 4 foot 9 And being this weight. I kinda look like a blob and I think once I loose this weight I’ll love myself. I like me now. But will love me later
I have a support system. My sister and boyfriend and his family And I still see my Counceling people. Why. Because they are helping me out a lot. And thought with a group of may surgery people we will have something in common
Yeah for May !!!!!

Hi Sue! There are plenty of cheerful, positive people in this group for sure. You'll have an exciting journey ahead of you, can't wait to hear all about it! Post all the questions you want to ask.

My surgery was 2 months ago, every day for me is still a learning curve. I feel super blessed to have had a second chance in this... Also very thankful for the support this group provides.

Good Luck, you'll do great!

I was in the hospital 3 days and 2 nights for my bypass. The most important thing I brought was my cell phone charger!! Wish I had brought a toothbrush and toothpaste. You don't need much. Don't over pack. I wore stretchy sweatpants and a loose top with no bra to the hospital and wore the same thing home. I couldn't wear a bra for about a week because I had an incision in the front where my bra would rub.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
