HELP: Gaining Weight After Only 6 months from MGB

Because you're eating slider foods! Porridge, papaya, banana, yogurt = slider foods deluxe.

And btw? You didn't mention you were male and 6'1". Yet another piece of the critical puzzle.

Eat dense Protein first for satiety along with healthy fats.

THEN eat dense veggies to your volume prescription. (mine is 1c/meal max)

THEN eat berries, nuts, seeds if you still have room.

Avoid the carby stuff.

You will dramatically reduce your cravings, the number of times you eat, and up your weight loss.

But I will tell you? 55lbs for a 6'1" guy in 6months? Is crap weight loss. You are SQUANDERING your honeymoon period by eating too many carbs and too many cals for rapid weight loss. The end. Don't squander your honeymoon period. It will NEVER EVER EVER come again.

Some people in another group I am in say they don't feel any restriction and never get sick or really feel full, but it's the malabsorption aspect that still helps them lose weight. So if you're not feeling restriction, you'll need to exercise greater self-control and rely on the malabsorption aspect.

If I had to guess, based on my personal experience and what I've learned on this site, I'd say you're hungry because you're eating what we call slider foods. The foods that you are eating aren't sticking with you like higher Protein foods would. Just try it. Switch up your foods for a week and eat more protein and less carbs and sugar and see if we're right.

@FluffyChix I am sorry I thought you saw my profile, which lists my sex and info. Still, I am surprised because my surgeon and my nutritionists forbid me from eating nuts, which you wrote here for me to eat. They say that for the first 18 months at least it is very dangerous.

I am surprised you call my weight loss of 55lbs crap, my surgeon says it is a normal pace for my size as to get the MGB I want really obese, I was about 80lbs over weight, so i have lost already most of it and want to lose another 25lbs as the total. When I started I was 264lbs for a 6'1 male. I am now 211lbs, and I want to be about 185 is my target weight.

Anyways, i am surprised really about the nuts comment. I was told to never touch them and avoid them las much as possible. Weird.

Normal weight loss is 2-4lbs/week. Most men lose MUCH more rapidly than women and are closer to a 3-4lb/week loss schedule over the fist 6 months. You have 26weeks in 6 months. If you as a male lose 3 lbs per week, you would be closer to an 80lb loss. Yet, you are only 55lbs=2.12lbs of loss per week. That's achingly slow for a 6'1" dude. That's achingly slow for most of us women in the FIRST 6 MONTH HONEYMOON period.

I am on a cancer drug that puts me in super menopause by shutting down all of my female hormones, and I was still losing in your time frame about 3lbs per week. So yes, I think you are losing too slowly and eating too many simple carbohydrates and having too much fructose.

I know of ZERO surgeons who recommend getting your calories from juice. No fruit juices was an explicit order of my doc. Also "Don't drink your calories." Also, limit fruit and only have small servings of berries no more than a couple times a week. Also FOCUS on lean dense Protein, healthy fats, leafy greens, and low glycemic veggies. Have limited healthy fats in the form of healthy oils (EVOO, butter, ghee, avocado, nut butters as you tolerate them, and a few nuts here or there.)

That's the advice of my surgeon. I beat the %ages for weight loss despite my metabolic issues due to the cancer drug and one other. It's do-able. But I tell you now, I will gain weight like a hog if I ate that much fruit, and also ate porridge and ate 1800 cals a day with 267g of carbs. LOL. But I'd prolly be dead first. Cuz that amount of carbs/sugar would send me into a HR coma first.

I am not supposed to have nuts until 7-8 months. I was told that 7lbs a month weight loss starting around 3 months is normal; I am at about that (sometimes 5lbs) and I eat well and exercise like a beast now (well, compared to pre-op LOL). My "honeymoon period" lasted like 2 months. I lost 65lbs in that period... and only 22 over the next 3 months. That's a little over a pound a week I am losing.

You didn't have much to lose to begin with, so that's probably why you're losing slower. But you asked for advice and nice or not, everyone is right with respect to eating more Protein over carbs. Just give it a shot and see if it helps.

It's exactly how much I've lost in the same time period, so I don't think it's crap at all unless you do. My only other tip is instead of the evening snacking, if I'm hungry after dinner I drink a Protein Shake. They are very filling for me and then I have no urge to eat anything else before bed.

55lbs in 26 weeks is 2.11lbs per week. You are a female 5'6". Only you can say whether that is slow for you. Females tend to lose slower than males (especially 6'1" males with not very much weight to lose). But it still breaks out to 2.11lbs per week which by my docs definition is the low end of average weekly loss. They base their rates on statistical analysis. But, at the end of it, 55lbs loss is 55lbs loss. When is the last time you lost that amount of weight in a year and are continuing to lose?

And even more importantly, are the foods you are filling yourself with keeping you satisfied and healthfully on you journey? If you are starving like the OP, then likely you need to look at your diet to see if there is any glaring thing hanging out that you know you feel better without. It just might speed up your weight loss if you kick it to the curb. :)

I'm in perimenopause and I'm quite happy, sated and still losing, so I think I'm doing awesome. My post was not at all a dig at you. I enjoy your posts quite a bit!

Yep yep yep. Then IMHO, to average 2.11lb/week in those circumstances is pretty amazing! Congrats!

The stomach eventually empties. Sliders move through quickly. Also eating too slowly or for too long a period will cause you to eventually eat around the surgery. Denser foods that take longer to digest sit longer. Also i have personally notices the longer i wait to drink after i eat the longer i feel filled/satified.

I'm not a 6' 1" male... But i had to hack my surgery pretty early on as my hunger returned early, weightloss was very slow from the start and i refused to fail.

Just saying try the suggestions if you want... Or not.

You've done amazing and watching your hacks and journey have been inspiring! I totally get you. My hunger came back with a rage around 3 months? And I had very little restriction. It was a recipe for disaster. So like you, I had to figure out how to capitalize on exploit the honeymoon period to make it work for me.

Its fine that you decided to follow what you have been eating. All nutritionists/surgeons’ plans look different. We are sharing our surgeon's plans and experience. What works for us may not work for you. Take what’s useful and ignore the rest.

If your plan is high carb then you are doing phenomenal. Follow it.

It’s not the pretzels that is causing all your carb intake, you are consuming an excess carbs found in the other foods you listed. If you are not logging how do you know if you are eating 1200 calories and what your carbohydrate intake is?

I can also eat soft foods in the amount you are talking about. The soft foods and carbs will continue to make you hungry. An option to try is dense Protein (not soft slider foods) with some fibrous vegetable. This may help with your surgery volume (the ability to eat as much as you are in one sitting) and help satisfy hunger.

Hope you see the scale moving down again soon.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
