nssmia 29 Posted April 3, 2019 Was scheduled for a sleeve recently. Then I cancelled it and decided to try weight watchers (for the 4th time) after 1 month very minimal weight loss. Currently 198 and 5ft 6in. My goal weight is160. One part of me says just keep struggling with weight watchers . The other part say go for the surgery. I'm 66 yrs old and in good health except for sleep apnea and gerd. Any suggestions much appreciated Sent from my SM-J727V using BariatricPal mobile app 1 ProudGrammy reacted to this
it'sonlythefirststep 141 Posted April 3, 2019 Maybe try the liquid diet (mine was two weeks). Nothing but liquids, no food. I lost 14 lbs. maybe with weight watchers and alternate between the two. Spending $$$$ for surgery Might not be a wise thing to do. It is definitely a life changing surgery. This is just my opinion. My choice was surgery but I had over 125 lbs to lose. 4 ProudGrammy, DWentz, GreenTealael and 1 other reacted to this
Wickedwinner 140 Posted April 3, 2019 Try intermittent fasting. Lots of people I know lost weight doing it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 3 1 Sosewsue61, FluffyChix, GreenTealael and 1 other reacted to this
Briswife15 890 Posted April 3, 2019 Something caught my eye about your post...you have GERD, and there is a real possibility that the sleve surgery would make your GERD a lot worse. Do some looking around on this forum and you will find those having sleeve to RNY revision due to severe GERD. So, based on how little you have to lose, and your preexisting condition, My opinion is that you shouldn't have the sleeve surgery. Keep trying through diet modification and exercise. Good luck to you!Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app 4 Aprilgal, Losingit2018, FluffyChix and 1 other reacted to this

elcee 3,341 Posted April 3, 2019 My BMI when I got my band in 2009 was approx 32. Was it worth it ? HELL YES! I got down to a BMI of approx 22 before I slowly regained. Revised to RNY in Jan at a BMI of 28 ( due to reflux and other issues) and am now down to a BMI of 23. 3 GreenTealael, FluffyChix and DWentz reacted to this
anl1990 91 Posted April 3, 2019 I personally do not think it is worth it at your size. You are already so close to your goal! I say just keep trying, and you can get there without having to go to such an extreme option. 2 GreenTealael and DWentz reacted to this
domi 237 Posted April 3, 2019 If I was that close, I would not have done the surgery. I think what really helped me start losing was a combination of efforts. I was doing weight watchers, along with using the app and doing okay, but slow. To get weight loss surgery, I had to see a nutritionist, psychologist and a trainer. These were life changing. I saw the nutritionist for 4 months, she taught me more about the combination of foods (more than WW did). The trainer helped me learn to move correctly and motivated me to move more without causing more pain. The psychologist helped me realize I mattered. I had put myself so far back on my to-do list that I stopped caring for myself. With this combination of help, I gained a total support system and learned a new way to eat. I no longer was dieting. This was key to me. Best of luck to you whatever you decide. 5 Losingit2018, DanaC84, Nay143 and 2 others reacted to this
elcee 3,341 Posted April 3, 2019 There will be lots of people that say it’s not worth it. That you are not heavy enough that you can do it on your own. Remember every person that got to a BMI of 40 or more would once have had a BMI similar to yours. If it was that easy to lose on your own they would have done so not continued gained until they reached the 40 plus. 5 Aprilgal, FluffySaysForkIt!, FluffyChix and 2 others reacted to this

Even with only 35 # to LOSE, the weight is just not coming off. I'm giving it the month if April to LOSE 10 lb on weight watchers. If that doesn't happen, I will make my decision. Sick of weighing 200 . Appreciate your comments Sent from my SM-J727V using BariatricPal mobile app

Sick of weighing 200 . Appreciate your comments We are in sort of a similar boat. I am 5'4" and currently weigh in at 202. I have several medical issues though. Severe GERD, high cholesterol and blood pressure without medications, sleep apnea, and...I have had two kidney transplants (the current one is doing well, thank God). I am very grateful to be alive, but I want to thrive and be happy with my body. I have lost and regained the same 30 to 40 lbs over and over and I too am tired of hovering around 200lbs. I know what it feels like to weigh less, and I do feel better, physically. I like to run and it is painful at this weight. No matter what I do, and I have done it ALL, I can't seem to keep my weight off (I also don't seem to go above 210lbs either. It is like my weight is set around the 200lb mark😠). I had a Nissen Fundoplication for the GERD about 4 years ago, and it worked well, but it didn't last. I was told that a RnY is a permanent fix to GERD and mine is really bad due to recurring hiatal hernias. It is almost 6 weeks since your last post. Did you decide on what to do? Either way, I hope you are doing well.😊 Edited May 22, 2019 by drawingdami grammar 1 Aprilgal reacted to this
mrblond 56 Posted May 22, 2019 I know when I would stall when trying to lose weight before surgery, id cut the carbs and my weight would drop and drop pretty fast.. I just love bread and Pasta to much to stay with it 1 Nay143 reacted to this
TeeJay84 33 Posted May 22, 2019 I feel for you. But, in my opinion, it's not worth it. Surgery is an extreme measure. Most of us took this step not to simply lose weight but to improve our health. We accepted the risks associated with the surgery because they weren't as bad as what we were facing. With your GERD, even well-controlled, you're risking a major change to the quality of your life. I don't know any GOOD surgeon who would do a sleeve on someone who has GERD already knowing how bad it can get post-surgery. I hope that you came here for all opinions, not just validation. Please understand that those of us who are saying it's not worth it are not trying to discourage you or have forgotten our struggles when we were at a lower BMI. We just want you to be well informed and think about the long-term. Good luck with whatever you decide! We're here to support. 2 domi and GreenTealael reacted to this
Aprilgal 91 Posted May 23, 2019 I had horrible GERD and my surgeon explained that the RnY procedure has been used to treat acid reflux in the past successfully. I haven't had one GERD episode since. My quality of life has seriously increased. Secondly, not that I am trying to be negative but I have done the whole I am dieting and being successful this time it is going to stick and nope. I just wish someone had pulled on my coat tails two years ago when I weighed 200lbs. You have to do what is best for you at then end of the day. Congrats for all the hard work (you still have to work with wls you just have a heavy lighting tool the first year) and continued success wherever your path leads. 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
Sosewsue61 3,185 Posted May 24, 2019 Only you can decide based on your history of weight loss, our opinions are just opinions. Do you have sleep apnea - have they done a sleep study? Any other medical issues? And it's not true that if you have GERD that you can't have the sleeve. https://www.sleeveacademy.com/heartburnLTS
