Unexpected Side Effects

Recommended Posts

Okay, so it's only day two of my 'hybrid' pre-op diet, and I'm already dealing with the unexpected. My diet is 3 glucerna shakes a day, one meal of no more than 500 calories, and up to 300 calories of fruit/veggie Snacks per day. I'm doing this for the whole month of April, not sure what's in store for May yet.

The things I didn't expect... peeing like mad and the gassiness (burping, farting, bloated feeling). I have always eaten a lot of veggies, so it's not the increase in Fiber. So, I'm asking the dreaded question... Is this normal?

Hmmm.. have you had Glucerna shakes prior to this? If so, have you had the gassiness before? My first thought is that there may be lactose in the shakes upsetting your system. As for the peeing a lot, are you also drinking upwards of 80 oz of Fluid a day? I'm always in the bathroon, but drink 100 oz a day.

You sound like me, I did the entire. month of August 2018, knew by my surgeon's actions I must have had NASH, many obese people do, worked and worked well, lost 15 pounds, but I had the smooth, sleek liver of a newly born calf, made my surgery easier on Dr Needleman and myself. Know the top scar, just below my sternum, was where he placed the liver retractor, a lot more easy to place a small one instead of a thick, one with " load levelers" built in. My daddy once had a car with load leveler shocks, if made. a really neat, whirring noise if there was anything heavy,in the back end of the vehicle. Was a very, nest vehicle, we were, very happy with it until the garage towed it in for repair of something else, broke those shocks and it was never quite right afterwards. Stupid Mechanics!

Thank you so much for your input... It's been years since I've used Glucerna, and then it was only as an occasional supplement while I was pregnant. I hadn't considered the lactose in them. I've never noticed a problem with dairy before, but I've also never been relying on it so heavily for my nutrition. I'll have to keep an eye on that. As for Water, I'm a water fiend and have been for years, so I'm not seeing an uptick in my water intake (60 - 80 oz a day). I also connected the fact that I've got a sensitive bladder that's irritated by artificial sweeteners (if I drink a coffee with Splenda I have to be near a bathroom a half hour later, no question) with the Glucerna, so that may explain the peeing like crazy.

Frustr8, you make me chuckle with the way your brain works. :) I've lost 5 lb in two days so I'm on my way. I'm hoping that the bloated/gassy feelings will subside once my body adjusts to this new diet.

I tried a new shake recently, not realizing it had lactose in it, and I got bloated and gassy. I guess I'm lactose intolerant. Like others have already said, it could be the Glucerna shakes.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
