Constantly hungry

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

My gastric sleeve surgery was on March 17 2019. I am two weeks in.

Problem is, I am constantly hungry and have only lost a total of 6 pounds in the first few days and nothing after.

My hunger is not head hunger, as I am back to work and quite busy and not thinking of food but almost every hour my stomach starts growling and is hurting with hunger. I am eating whole liquids and soft foods like yogurt.

Any ideas if this means that my surgery may not succeed?

In the beginning your stomach is still healing and you will get a lot of growling. Are you drinking all of your Water and getting enough Protein? In the beginning I ate 5 - 6 meals to get in all of my protein. Try to spread out your protein all day as this helps keep you felling full longer. Also if you haven't, meet with a nutritionist and have them help set a meal plan. We are learning a new way to eat and our bodies are adapting. I learned that my stomach growling also meant my body was thirsty. Best of luck to you.

I ate grits and cream of wheat. Cream Soups seemed to help me stay full longer too.

I had a similar problem. My nutritionist explained that it was probably acid production causing issues. I never even considered that because I have no reflux or heartburn symptoms, but as soon as I was on Prilosec for a could of days that feeling went away and I haven't had it since. When I ate, it went away too and I interpreted that as hunger. I take my Prilosec every day now! Maybe it could help?

It's still really soon post-op, so give your body some time to adjust. Are you eating enough Protein? Drinking enough? Whenever you feel hungry, drink something until it's time for your next meal.

I do remember being more hungry in the first couple of stages. Once you get to real foods again, you'll get fuller.

I noticed that if I don't time my intake (pureed foods, Protein and water) at an hourly/bihourly rate, I do feel hunger. Try timing your intake and maybe that can help. Make sure each hour something is going into the stomach.

I hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
