Surgery today: Feeling hopeless

Recommended Posts

I am having my surgery done late today.

I am not proud to say that I did not follow my pre-op diet perfectly. In fact, I got so hungry that one day before when I am supposed to drink only Clear Liquids I ended up eating a meal. I just gave up. I have this feeling that nothing is going to help me anyways.

I have been trying to lose weight forever. Since I got pregnant it has been a never-ending battle and I always look at food to comfort, reward and Celebrate.

I had gastric balloon but barely lost 8 pounds on it. I have had Lipo twice on the abdomen. I just bounce back bigger and bigger.

Now I am to have this surgery tomorrow which I hope is safe considering my liver probably did not shrink much. Knowing myself, I am not sure if this operation will be worth it because I know I will try to eat the same way again.

So how did you change your relationship with food? How did you give up on it without being miserable? Is there any hope for me at all?

Oh no, I'm sorry you're feeling so badly, especially right before surgery! :(

It isn't hopeless, though. You're still trying!

Have you tried therapy and/or eating disorder treatment? That's the only way I know to change the relationship with food. I think I've finally done it but only after some years of treatment, pain, and a lot of hard work. In fact, I couldn't get approved for the surgery until I had proven my eating disorder was in remission for 6 months...

Treatment is out there. It's definitely not easy but it offers healing.

In the meantime, good luck today! I wish you the best. 🌷

First of all, I wish all the luck in the world today. I’m going in on Wednesday. It’s a very nerve racking thing to go through.

My surgeon recommended this course to me that helped me have a better relationship with food. It’s called intuitive eating. If there is a class teaching this near you, I recommend taking it. It really is a lifesaver.

You mentioned that you Celebrate and reward yourself with food. Maybe finding other ways to reward yourself, new clothes, shoes or something that you have wanted for a long time.

I come from a family where no matter the occasion, sad or happy, food is always the center of that. That’s been the tough part for me through all of this. My mother is a self classified “ feeder”.

i have faith in you! If this is what you want then you will succeed!!

Have you considered talking with a counselor about your food issues? I have always eaten out of depression or boredom but now with the sleeve surgery it's easier to say "no" when those feelings come on. Good luck on your surgery and cheer up!

You aren't hopeless. Plenty of people felt that way too.

Seek the help you deserve, your Surgical team or Primary may have access to therapist or other group programs to help.

Elvira's silence is telling. I bet her surgery procedure went through anyway and she's in recovery! This said, although I am very new here, from what I've read it's generally not a good idea to sneak food before surgery, especially that close before it. The stomach finishes digestion 8-10 hours after you eat so there was likely little or no food left in hers, but guaranteed her surgeon knew there were food remains in her large intestine and will scold her a bit about it. But her silence so far makes me hopeful. I am pulling for her they operated anyway and she will be fine. Don't cheat, folks! (Says the girl who munched poke with no rice a day ago...) *blush*

Before or after my sleeve, I should have been in counseling. I had too many things going on including grief and loss.
I was sick both mentally and physically. I would tell most individuals going through this process; Please seek profesional mental health support. Select someone who has experience with Bartrics.

Sounds like you have given up on you. I guess I suggest finding ways to love yourself. You are not your body. You are more than just a size.
Can you find a bariatric support group in your area? Also psychology today website can let you filter weightloss specialistsnfor counseling. You may just need to learn to view things differently. You are a valuable person. My surgeon even says there is no reason to blame the patient because it's not their fault. There are many biological and.psychological reasons people gain weight.
I can empathize with looking for comfort. Can you think of something u could use instead for comfort? A hobby, reading, support group, behavioral modifications, even using something like a food journal, popsicles made of Isopure 40 g Protein zero carb drink. It gives you a dessert and something to keep your mouth busy during a comfort food crisis. Or even Water popsicles plain or.made with water enhancers?

Hey guys. Thank you for all the support. Surgery went great. I am in pain (Gas pain is no joke) for the last two days. I’m two days post op and can barely keep the Water down without hurting. Now I’m all sorts of confused about what I can drink and what I can’t. Is there a list or a thread that experts can point me to ?

Surgery Experience - I had in Mexico Tijuana. The facility was great and the staff was sooo supportive. They are very nice and take care of every need that you have. Landed at SD airport morning at 11 and was picked up not soon after. Then IV, anesthesia, surgery the usual. Woke up feeling like I’m gonna die from the gas pain, but pain meds helped. Still struggling a lot with pain. Next day was slightly better. I walk as much as I can but in my case that doesn’t seem to help, neither did the GasX drops. I guess it’s one of those things that will take its own time. Now I’m looking for guidance on what to eat and what not, Vitamins, other supplements etc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
