How soon after surgery did you wait to workout?

Recommended Posts

So my surgeon said you have a greater risk of hernia form sneezing or coughing initially after surgery. He said there was a 10# lifting limit the first 2 weeks and after that said to take it slow and stop if it feels like I am straining.

So here I am at almost 6 weeks post surgery and I have done cardio and very low weight higher reps at the gym on machines, not free weights. I am starting to do house things like easy gardening and vacuuming without pain.

I am scared to push it and would like to know when you felt you could push yourself.

Thanks,

I was doing cardio and going to the gym at 2 weeks but not lifting or doing strength training machines until 6 weeks and then stuck with light weights for another 4 weeks until I felt I could do heavier weights.

If you have doubts, consult with your surgeon.

Otherwise just increase activity/weights in small increments and pay attention to how you feel after & the next day.

I started going to the gym exactly at my 2 week mark! I usually do a couple miles of cardio and then I do some weight machines, and I take it slow with the weights!

I needed the answer to that question question so thanks. I had my surgery on 3/20/19. Tomorrow will be my first day back at the gym. A little nervous but I'm going bright and early.

I was cleared to lift weights about three months post op. I started walking around my local community as soon as I got home from hospital. There was a lot of slow shuffling up and down the street the first days back (more for circulation than exercise), but now I’m power walking and loving it.

I started doing cardio and sauna 2 weeks post op and got back into free weights at 4 weeks (starting very light compared to the normal) I am now 7 weeks post op and have been gradually increasing up to normal plus my work requires some heavy lifting often

I waited about 3 months to really get into exercising. I was originally lifting weights along with elliptical but I strained a muscle in the lower abdomen right near one of my incisions so that put a nix on the weight lifting for now. I’ve been running 4 days a week now that it’s nice out. I wish I would have started exercising sooner but Im making up for lost time!

I was nearly 4 months out until I was back serious lifting, before that I focused on fitness and mobility and light free weights (I have a significant background in lifting) . It takes a while to work out how to get the right combination of calories in for good post workout recovery and I still end up burning from half to all the calories I eat each day so at the moment I'm maintaining the muscle I have left rather than building more although strength is slowly getting better. I lost quite a bit of muscle in those first 3 months post op especially as I couldn't tolerate Protein drinks.

Just listen to your body, take plenty of recovery days and concentrate on good quality nutrition 😁

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
