3 days post op

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Had the sleeve done on 3/26 and came home 3/28. The surgery itself went well, but I had pretty bad vomiting from the moment I woke up and throughout the first night. I kept worrying I'd screw everything up by blowing a staple or something tearing, but I didn't! The next day was better and they were giving me everything they could to fight the nausea. The other thing I kept thinking is "Did it work?" Only because I woke up feeling hungry! That's not supposed to happen is it?

Right now the only thing bothering me is the gas. Most of it is gone but I keep getting a sharp one near my stomach, so I'm working on walking that sucker out :)

I do have a question on what amounts to eat. Right now I'm on the liquids for two weeks, so I have my Protein Shakes and made some pudding. The nurse has said to dip your spoon in and straight out, and whatever sticks you eat. Also, tiny sips of Water. I don't know how I'll make it to the 64oz they want with taking such tiny sips, but I'll keep trying. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!

My surgeon prepared me that there was no way I’d be able to reach my Water intake goals those first few days, maybe even week (s). When he came to see me in the hospital he said to just try to get in 6 oz every hour I was awake. He was not concerned about Protein or anything else. So yep , sip, sip, sip and then you got it, sip some more. 😎. Also try baby/toddler utensils. Helped me take smaller bites. Just go real slow. It takes awhile to make friends with your new anatomy but your pouch will let you know when it’s not happy

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
