As far as I know - just cut out carbs., eat plenty of Protein, cut out caffeine and fizzy drinks, any fatty foods ....... Basically - that's it as I understand it !!!

Each surgeon is different. Some require a liquids-only diet. Mine just required a calorie restriction of no more than 1500 calories per day and no fatty or fried foods for the two weeks prior to surgery.

First question is - does your surgeon even require one (many don't)? Some specifically don't want their patients doing a multi-week fast as they want them as strong as possible going into surgery (and fasting liquid diets don't do it.) So, see what your program requires and prefers, and if you want to do a diet, tailor it to their needs. If they don't require a diet, then go moderate if you want to do one, and just cut out the junk food.

It is never a bad idea to start working on the long term habits of healthy eating that will serve you long after surgery, Exploring different Protein Drinks to find ones that you like, or at least tolerate, as they will be a staple for a while after surgery. Beyond that, start by cutting out junk food and increasing fruits and vegetables, whole grains instead of processed white stuff, etc. Do what you can to adjust your tastes for the better.

I would ask your surgeon or nutritionist what they recommend. I think everybody is told something a little bit different based on what their care team prefers. For me, my guidelines were that I should have about 4 Protein Shakes daily. With Breakfast I could have 1/2 cup of berries and I could have a lean Protein and a cup of veggies for dinner. I could also sub in a yogurt for lunch instead of a Protein Shake if I wanted.

My dr is only 4 Protein Shakes and 2 Protein Bars per day. With that I can add 3 sugar free Jello or popsicles and that is all.

Thanks All, I have started my Meal Replacement diet and so far I am very impressed with how satisfying it is. I have lost a bunch of weight and hope to be a few pounds under 300 when I go for my surgery. 12 pounds to go!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
