liquid diet after surgery

Recommended Posts

My surgery was yesterday. I just got home, showered and am going to take a nap begire my evening snack. But I have a question:

can I drink Water along with my liquid meals? Like, my Protein Drink is considered a meal, so can I drink water with that?

Also, when can I start having meals that are hot or cold rather than Luke warm?

thanks for any help

Hi Rachel,

Congratulation on a successful surgery. From what I've read here it seems each individual nutritionist put there patients on a set schedule on how and when to start their eating plan. You might want to check with your nutritionist to make sure that you are following their guideline which will help you to have a successful and safe post op recovery.

Wishing you the best.

You probably can (check with your medical team) as the concern with drinking at meals is trying to avoid conflicts with the food that is going through, and to avoid washing things through more quickly than they should - you want to keep the food in your stomach as long as possible to avoid hunger afterwards. So, Water with a liquid meal doesn't really do anything, but it would be best to avoid it just from the perspective of practicing good bariatric habits.

Start now getting in the habit of not drinking with your meals, even though they're liquid meals. If affects the amount of time "food" is in your stomach, absorption, feeling of fullness, etc. I didn't have any restrictions on food temperature.

I was sucking ice chips immediately after and clear broths were part of my pre op and post op diet. But it goes without saying, check with your team if possible. sugar free popsicles were also on my plan and felt so good

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
