Transfering to alcohol?

Recommended Posts

I was an Addict (alcohol and Sedatives) BEFORE the lapband. After about 2 years of recovery, I got banded. I use "The Work", www.thework.com, to deal with the thinking that leads to the emotion that leads to the (Food, Alcohol, whatever!). It ALWAYS starts with a thought. I have given up alcohol, drugs and cigarettes using The WORK (IT'S EASY AND ITS FREE) and use it in conjunction with my band - I have never been so at peace in my life. Give it a try. Contact me and I can send you a cd, too. No cost - i just love sharing this remarkable tool that helps me so much!

I do not drink but the Oprah show is addressing this issue on Friday. People who have had wls and have new addictions. JSYK

Anyone else noticing that as they address the food issues, and can no longer use food to compensate, that alcohol has gained in attractiveness? Seriously I used to drink once every six months. Now I find I am looking for booze a couple times a week. Any one relate?:faint:

Cool, metal - thanks. The issue is certainly becoming more talked about. I have no reason to think this is true, but I suspect that Bypass Surgery has a higher incidence of this - it would be interesting to know. There is another thread that talks about Suicide statistics among WLS folks being significantly higher, too.

I still think it is probably a very small percentage.

I've never been a big drinker. Maybe 3x a year. Since banding, I have liked the taste of alcohol more.. I don't feel like I'm deprived of food and transferring.. maybe I'm in denial hah hah. I still don't drink often, maybe once a month.. but that's still more than I use to. I like dirty martinis now. I just have one when I decide to drink, but I love it. In the past I drank only to get drunk, hated the taste of alcohol and would just shoot stuff holding my nose.

This is going to sound patronizing. Lauraj, it's because you are growing up.

Dirty Martinis are Yummolicious.

There was an Oprah show about this over a year ago. One woman was an excessive spender, another started drinking like crazy, and the third woman starting sleeping with anything that wasnt tied down! Crazy. I just posted another thread about stressing out a lot lately and not knowing how to deal with it, as I always crammed food down my throat before.

I can see the problem with the booze and spending, but the other lady sounds like she is having a good time!

Hey, if you want, Para, I will send you a CD and book on using "The Work" for dealing with stress. It is a simple way to identify and question the stressful thoughts that lead to the fridge! It is easy and free. I would be glad to send you something, just email me your address at private@meetingyourmind.com

Love to all!

Hah, maybe that's it.

Your alcohol taste buds have to mature? :)

I'm craving one now.. mmm

I've only been banded about 2 1/2 weeks, but before banding used to drink a couple of drinks every day. I LOVE beer. Oh well, the carbonation is now an issue......But, I thought giving up alcohol would be difficult for me. Funny, I haven't even missed it for one minute these past few weeks. There is always beer in the fridge, a bottle of wine in the bar, and spiced rum or vodka on the counter. I haven't touched it. I sure hope this lasts.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
