How long is the RNY surgery, typically?

Recommended Posts

Having my RNY surgery Wednesday and want to give hubby an idea of how long he'll be in the waiting room. Forgot to ask surgeon. I'm having a robotic-assisted, laparoscopic RNY.

Thanks! I was thinking 2.5 to 3 housr, but don't know.

Well you'll be staying in the hospital overnight at least but I'm pretty sure I read the surgery is usually about 90mins but it can vary for numerous reasons just tell him to wait, bring a book or iPad if he needs to keep occupied lol

And Mikeyy is correct, a ball park figure is 3-4 hours, could be,less, robotic are among the best and quickest but you surgeon will take just as long as it takes to get it done rights My RnY surgery was at 7AM , I was done, awake, and in my own room by 10:15. I was 72, if anyone was gonna have problems, by logic, it should have been ME! You youngins should have it "Made in the Shade!" God Bless you all and Happy and Smooth Surgeries!

my surgery was about 90 minutes. But of course, if you factor in prep time and recovery, then yes, probably 3-4 hours. But the surgery itself is pretty quick.

I was told by my surgeon to expect a 4 hr surgery because its a revision and it takes a long time to separate the stomach from the liver.

BallPark figure I was told, for uncomplicated, 90 minutes to 2 hours. I'm sure it will be exactly the amount of time each case necessitates.

i had my surgery on june 12. i was under and in surgery for 90 min and out in recovery. they kept me overnight for fluids, keeping an eye on me and making sure that there was no complications. i was released the next day. i wont lie, the first two weeks are the worst. i had lots of pain, lethargy and serious bruising. now, im in the pureed food stage and things are SLOWLY getting better :) good luck on your surgery!!!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
