Calling to Post-Ops;Any Tips to being successful post-op(first weeks,months,year)

Hi I’m scheduled for surgery on 03/26/19. Im just wondering what can I do to facilitate my weight loss and be successful on my journey especially the beginning of post-op to a year. Please those who are post-op any tips?

Congrats on your upcoming surgery. Hope all goes smoothly and you have a quick recovery!

I would recommend trying to not compare yourself to others. It's soooo tempting, but your journey isn't theirs and there's always a load of backstory that you don't know. Our bodies are all so different and comparing doesn't help. You can only work with the one you've got.

I'd also recommend that you take your measurements now. There will be times when you stall (It sucks but happens to most of us). Inches almost always go down when you stall and it helps to keep your spirits up.

Good luck tomorrow! Today is my six-month post op anniversary. My biggest tip would be to focus on Water first and Protein next. After you are recovered (I would say it was month 3 for me) start adding weight training 2-3 times per week. Also, start a new facial regimen now to help reduce extra wrinkles from the weight loss. Finally, don’t invest a lot in smaller clothes until later because you will transition so quickly. I have found myself going to Goodwill to keep basics in current size. I used Baritastic App on my phone to track my progress and keep a food log and journal. This is going to be an amazing journey, but it's not going to be easy. But, I am almost six months out and it was the best decision I have ever made. I also got the Gastric Sleeve Bariatric Cookbook by Sarah Kent. It was eventually extremely helpful when I was able to eat more varieties of food. Congratulations and best of luck. You are going to do great!

Learn to shop the 3 Walls.

The layout of every American grocery store is stamped out in some factory somewhere.

1. Fruits and Veggies

2. Protein (meats)

3. Dairy

Stay out of the center of the store.

as an added bonus look at the Nutrition label and if it says ADDED sugar put it back 100% of the time.

I’m 7 months out.

My top 2 tips are, 1. Track EVERYTHING and 2. Wait at least 30 minutes (or longer if your Dr recommends that) after a meal before you drink.

Hey! I'm almost a year out and I've lost about 110 pounds!

Some of the biggest things I can tell you are the following:

1. As someone mentioned above, try not to compare yourself to others. Your body is different than everyone else's (height, weight, metabolism, etc) so focus on yourself! One of the best tools I got was a smart scale (I believe I got mine from Amazon for like 35 bucks?). It connects to an app on my iPhone and tracks weight trends, body fat, muscle mass, etc... I know that a lot of these body composition measurements are not super accurate, but having a general idea of the trend is reassuring. I would also recommend doing body measurements (I do mine every 3 months). Whenever I feel like I'm really stalling, I look back at my app and look at the little graph from the last 11 months and think "Wow, ok I did that." and it makes things a little bit easier.

2. Don't buy a ton of clothes right away... you're going to lose a lot of weight and your body is going to change. Look at thrift and resale stores for a few items every now and then to get a few things but if there's anything you really want (for me, it was a pair of really nice jeans) wait until you're almost to your goal or you hit a huge milestone and treat yourself!

3. Keep a list of personal NSV (non-scale victories)... I do this on the notes app on my phone. Whenever I am feeling down about myself or having a stall in my weight loss! In my opinion, the NSV's are more important than the numbers on the scale because I made this change for a better quality of life, not to see a certain number on the scale. Some of my favorite NSV on my journey thus far was buying size 2 jeans, having to get a new drivers license because people didn't believe it was me, and my personal favorite, being able to cross my legs while sitting.

remember WHO you are doing this for and stay focused on you, use you tool and let it do the work as any tool it needs maintenance and that is your part walk and follow dr s instructions cheers and much success to you and your new tool

My tip is if your bariatric team offers any sort of support group, check it out. Besides that, stick to your eating plan and exercise/move daily.
