Surgery Date 6/06/19 - I think I'm ready!

Recommended Posts

I've been collecting products since before my first appointment 10/30/18; I know that many people caution against buying so much ahead of time, but I like having options and I understand my taste buds may change after surgery. I am using a lot of the products in the two plus months before surgery.

Wow! That's what I call prepared. I found a Protein before surgery I liked and after surgery I can't stand the smell of whey.

They're not kidding when they say your tastes change. I had to take it all to my support group and give it away. Also, Water tasted sweet after I got out of surgery.

Good luck.

Ps tried my favorite drink yesterday from Starbucks and it just doesn't taste the same. Mango dragonfruit.

Oh wow, you are more than ready. The only thing I've purchased so far is a box of Premier Protein shake and box of of Bone Broth Soup. I will do a bigger shopping after my pre op class with the nutritionist. I like the water bottle with the time time and ounces.

That's alot of RTD Protein Drinks and shakes must cost a ton.

I've been buying bulk Protein Powder and bulk Vitamins and finding air tight containers on special whenever I can...

I've been reading everything I can find, here and on Facebook. I know RTD drinks are more expensive but I've always had issues getting the powders to mix properly, I don't have the patience!

I have stocked my freezer with homemade Soups. I froze them at different stages. I kept some as broth, and blended some for puree, and then some as is. I used homemade chicken Soup, and homemade stew. For puree soups, I also made a creamy Tomato and a squash soup. I was going to make pinto Beans and freeze at the different stages, but I've read that beans are not good to have after surgery.

CalGal I'm sure your homemade Soups will be way better than my packaged soups!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
