Gallbladder issues

Recommended Posts

There hasn't been a gallbladder surgery thread in a while, so I have a question for those who've had their gallbladder removed -

I had my gallbladder out 3 weeks ago. Still, if I eat any appreciable amount of fat (say over 8g/meal) I get the terrible, cramping pain like I had before surgery. I've googled this and everything I found said that you could have issues with gas/diarrhea for a while until your system adjusts. But, I haven't seen anything that talked about the kind of pain I'm having. It is not gas, does not cause bathroom issues and the pain starts immediately, while I'm still eating. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks in advance!

I had mine out years ago and the first 6 months were a roller coaster. I was put on a strict zero fat diet for 6 months post op. I can tolerate small amounts now but too much will make me sorry . I would double check with your specialists though. And I’m sorry you’re experiencing this

Thanks for the response. But, what was the nature of your roller coaster? Was it gas, diarrhea, pain, other?

Remember with your gallbladder gone your bile duct has a straigh shot into your small intestine. My body's reaction to what it feels is too much fat, I get bright yellow mucously stools, only time I revert back from my semi- obstinate Constipation. Any less than Miralax twice daily and I become a Very Unhappy Camper💩and extremely crabby to one and all!

Horrible dumping which wasn’t just contained to after meals, pain and discomfort around my sternum and ribs. The slightest amount of fats would make me ball up and usually result in being physically sick. So much so that to this day those commercials on tv of hamburgers dripping with grease make me gag. It took me a good 6 months before I started feeling myself again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
