Optifast before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi Im new around here, my name is Kate and Im from Australia. I am having

surgery on the 4th of feb and for the next few weeks I am on an Optifast diet. I was just wondering if anybody else has had to be on a special diet before your surgery?

Before my husband had his band, he was on the Atkins for a while and then Optifast the week just before his surgery. The week before my surgery I too will be on the Optifast. (at least I think that is the brand.)

The liver will shink with the weight-loss, and the reason for this is that our surgeon wants the most room to be able to do the surgery.

Hi, Kate! Your banding is right around the corner! Several band drs. have their patients on specific diets -before and after banding. The important thing is to follow your band surgeon's instructions. He/she has those rules for a reason. How much weight are you wanting to lose?

Hi Kate,

I'm from melbourne and my surgeon had me on the Optifast diet for 2 weeks before surgery also. It's hard but it is very important to shrink your liver to make the surgery easier & safer. You'll also loose quite a few kilos over the 2 weeks also, and not just Water weight :o

Good luck with you surgery! Cammy

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
