Blood sugar spike one year after surgery

Recommended Posts

I had roux en y last February, I’m over one year out and down 171 pounds and counting! So that’s great 😁
I had my one year lab results returned and the nurse wants me to talk to my primary about my glucose which was 119 the day of labs. The doctor told me specifically that it was not a fasting lab, and I did eat before the labs.
My father had type 2 diabetes but has since managed it and is now only on metformin and no longer needing insulin.
My labs before surgery were around 60, which was fasting and I have never dealt with this issue even weighing over 300 pounds and living off of sweets and junk food.
Has anyone else experienced this?!

Congrats on your amazing success! You look great!

If your bg wasn't a fasting one, what does it matter? 119 is fine if you ate less than 2 hours before that test. If you ate longer than 2 hours before the test, then 119 is a little on the high side. But it depends on what you ate at that meal and what you normally eat in a day--specifically how many carbs you average.

If you typically eat a low carb diet (<50g of carbs a day), and have a cheat meal that is high carb, then you can have a HUGE spike that may not clear in under 2 hours. That doesn't mean you're diabetic, it means you've been low carb for a long time. Many of us WLS peeps are calorie restricted and Keto by factor of being low calorie (even in the presence of carbs). So our bodies have a skewed response to a high caloric/high glycemic load meal.

All labs done for my surgeon are 12hr fasting labs for accuracy. Maybe ask for a retest to be certain before going back on meds you may not need

💜 You did great congratulations 💜

Yes, I’m going to ask them to retest my blood sugar, when the nurse called with my results she said it was a concern, even though I shared with her I did not fast and was told I didn’t need to fast. She said the normal range for fasting was 65-99. And clearly if I had eaten it would be elevated. I did test my blood sugar this morning before eating or drinking and it was 102. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Have them do an A1c just to be sure but you seem to be fineI'm not sure why they are concerned

A single blood test shouldn’t be much concern. An A1C shows your average for over 3 months. I used to have to fast prior but the last few years my primary told me it was no longer necessary . I agree with @Marshalle11, request an A1C. And you look amazing 👍🏻

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
