Favorite brands for clear liquids?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Maybe this is somewhere else, but I was wondering what people's favorite brands are for broths and such while on Clear liquids.

I'm having my band done tomorrow. I've been on Clear Liquids yesterday and today and I can tell this is going to be tough. I haven't liked any of the brands of chicken broth that I've bought so far. Swanson's was ok. They're all so high in sodium, too, and I'm on a low-sodium diet for heart stuff. They don't even taste good to me because they're so salty. Today all I've really wanted is Water and tea. I like the broth idea because I like warm drinks (I've had to give up my beloved coffee for now) and it's flavorfull, but so far, it's not working for me.

I'm making some chicken Soup and was planning to just strain out the meat and veggies and feed my family with that. What about the seasonings? Is it ok to still have some pepper or dill in the broth?

Maybe I should post this seperately, but I'm also wondering how people cope with being on the liquids (which I'll be on for a month - clear, then full) while still feeding one's family. I have three little kids and a husband and I'm the primary cook. My family might have to eat really boring food for a month! At least they'll be really excited about Christmas dinners at the grandparents' houses! :P

I thought Swanson's made a low sodium variety? I Know Campbell's does. I like Swanson's with the roasted garlic flavor. Try boiling some veggies in the broth and then remove them. That should help a little. Where I am, we have boullion in a powder form and it comes in good flavors like shrimp and crab. Even before surgery I liked the 100% pure cranberry juice without sugar. Now they have it with pomegranate etc. I plan on drinking that for my clear liquids. I also like peppermint tea. It's so good it doesn't need sugar, and I DO NOT do artificial sweetners. They make me sick and give me horrible headaches.

Check out your health food/natural food store. That's where I get my low sodium canned foods. I know what you mean about the saltiness. Since I have been doing low sodium, I just hate regular broths. I got banded three days ago and the hospital broth was awful - plus it came with a packet of salt!!! Eech.

I made my own chicken broth. You can do this while making a chicken dish for the family. It really helps if you spice the stuff up a little. It wont hurt, but dont make it so spicy that you need to drink with it.

On my lazier days, I had Swanson low sodium stuff with pepper, garlic and greek seasoning added. I got so used to it that I still have it on occasion.

I also don't have anything salty, I simply don't like it. There are 2 brands that I really like. One is College Inn Organic chicken broth with 510 grams of sodium per cup. The other is Pacific natural foods organic free range chicken broth with 570grams of salt per cup. They both taste very good. I do not like Swansons or canned broth at all. These are in the 1qt boxes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
