Vthoo 2 Posted March 10, 2019 Hi everyone. I’m new to this site and just had surgery on 2/27. I was wondering if any ladies who have had their surgery experienced weight gain right after surgery? The morning of my surgery they weighed me and 2 1/2 days later when I was discharged, they weighed me again and I was 11 lbs. heavier. I understand bloating but have never been so bloated that I gained that much more weight. So just curious if anyone else had a similar experience.
TheMarine79 150 Posted March 10, 2019 There is all of the fluids they put into your iv. You will see that weight come down over the next several days 1 Lamermaid reacted to this
CaribeRidge 104 Posted March 10, 2019 Same here. It was the i.v. fluids. They give you a lot. I think even while you are in surgery they are pumping fluids into you. It does go down soon enough. 1 Lamermaid reacted to this
GradyCat 3,695 Posted March 10, 2019 Same thing everybody else has said - i.v. fluids from the hospital stay. Your body will figure everything out in a few days and you'll normalize. 1 Lamermaid reacted to this
DanaC84 1,116 Posted March 10, 2019 Same as what everyone said. All I want to add is don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t start coming off in just days. I came home 12 lbs heavier and I swear that scale hardly budged for the first two weeks. You’re swollen and your body is healing. It WILL normalize in it’s own time and you will start to see some progress on the scale. If you haven’t already I’d take your measurements. Even when the scale isn’t moving the inches are coming off. You’ve got this 👍🏻 1 Lamermaid reacted to this
DukeGal1106 5 Posted March 10, 2019 I agree with the previous posts. IV fluids can cause significant weight gain. Hang in there! It’ll come off. 1 Lamermaid reacted to this
Lynnlovesthebeach 626 Posted March 10, 2019 I found it ironic that I lost 9 lbs with my 2 week pre-op diet and gained exactly 9 lbs in the hospital in less than 24 hrs! I lost that plus 3 more the first week post op. It's normal.
Vthoo 2 Posted March 12, 2019 Thanks all for the reassurances. My only reference is my husband who had the same surgery 10 months ago and did not have this issue. So then I thought perhaps it happens mostly in women than men 😂
froufrou 678 Posted March 12, 2019 I gained 18 lbs!

My surgeon told me on Tuesday at my pre-op appointment that the first few days would be the worst and after that I would probably just be bored with consuming the same things everyday. No worries, you will lose it quickly. The past posts are all correct, they're the liquids they pumped in your system. I also gained 11 pounds, wow! Good Luck! One day at a time!
