"Supervised Exercise Program"

Recommended Posts

Part of Aetna's requirements is a supervised exercise program with an exercise therapist or "other qualified professional". I'm going to call my insurance company on Monday to ask, but until then, does anyone know what counts as a qualified professional? Could it be a physical therapist at my gym? Just wondering if anyone else had Aetna or similar insurance requirements.

Aetna wants your personal doctor to refer you to a dietitian or nutritionist that will put you on a diet plan and exercise plan like walking everyday for 30 minutes or riding a stationary bike, etc. You don't have to hire a personal trainer, the exercise will be a part of your diet the nut (as they are called on here LOL) recommends for you. I had to go on a Nut's diet and exercise plan for 6 months before I could set a date for surgery.

I have Aetna, they require 3 consecutive monthly visits with a physiatrist. My physiatrist recommended 6 visits with a physical therapist because of knee issues walking down stairs. I only went to 2 secession because I felt it was due to the excess weight I gained. I told him that I did not want to go back and that I have been going to the gym 3 days a week. He approved me with flying colors.

The Aetna plan I have requires only 3 dietician visits . They are mainly nutrition educational sessions. No supervised exercise. I have a gym membership so I utilize it 3 days a week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
