On my first meeting with my dietitian she told me that after surgery sodas are not permitted, because of the empty calories and sugar even, seltzer Water and the no calorie beverage should be off limit. They cause gas, bloating and risk of acid reflux.

I don't normally drink soda. I really just like Water milk. I every once in a while will drink a Powerade zero or a diet soda. Maybe twice a month I have one or the other. I'm just worried that decayed I can't eat I'm going to get tired of the milk and water which is kind of how I'm feeling. I don't want it every day even. I just thought I could have one to change it up but it doesn't matter now. I bought vita water and I'm satisfied.

There are all sorts of ways to flavor your water; fruit, cucumber, Water enhancers

Use this time to think about how you want to eat for the rest of your life. In my opinion, every bite and sip after surgery and for the rest of your life should be as nutritious and healthy as possible. Artificial sweeteners, colors, and flavorings don't meet the healthy criteria. Water and herbal teas are great. There is a lot of research that shows artificial sweeteners to be very detrimental to weight loss. They confuse the body/brain - lots of sweet but no calories? Let's just lay down some fat reserves just in case. The stuff is toxic - a chemical cocktail. If your goal is long term healthy living, just give it up now and be done with it. Just my opinion, and I wish you the very best surgery!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
