still researching lapband

Recommended Posts

I am very interested in getting the lapband surgery as soon as I can get my finances in place. I live in Canada and will have to pay $16000. I also have convinced my husband that he needs to do it with me. We can get some money back on income tax and a bit of a discount for two of us. I have a consultation appointment at Toronto Lapband Surgery Centre, TLBC, on Nov. 27. I want to book surgery immediately after that.

The burning question in my mind is "Is this the solution that will work forever?" I have dieted so many times and gained it back again. I have also spent so much money on diet plans, pills, etc. It seems like a miracle that lapband will finally get me to the weight I need to be and be able to maintain it. I am ready to focus all my energy on the diet and exercise part of lapband. I just am worried that I can hijack my own efforts if I start eating unwisely again.

I was just like you. Tried every diet in the world. I got the lapband 6 months ago, and have lost 33lbs. For me, it's not about what I eat now, but how much. Sure, I will lose more if I skip the ice cream, but I am still loosing with it. I eat 2/3 less than before. It's great.

I live in PEI and I am having a hard time finding a doctor. I do not have the opportunity to go and see the facilities and $16000.00 is a lot of money. Does anyone know of a cheaper place to get it done? And why is it so much money??????

Nice to see others from Canada.

I am still question also, if I am a good candiate to get this done.

I know many people on this board have gone to Mexico. I was a self pay at 15,000 and it was worth every penny. I don't know if I'd go to Mexico but it is always an option.

I've been banded for a little over 5 months and I've lost 53 lbs and the band saved my life. The band is not a cure all. It is a tool you have to use to change your eating habits. You can eat around your band if you want to. You just have to change your mind frame about food. Some days I do struggle but for the most part I love it and would not change a thing.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
