I am a little over 13 weeks out. I eat what I am supposed to, having dense Protein first. I eat the required amounts only. I never, ever feel full and have zero restriction. I feel the same when I’m done eating as I did before I ate. I. feel like I can eat more but I don’t. I do not have that deep down hunger like I did prior to surgery, but I have a constant, low level hunger 24/7. Really don’t feel like I had surgery, I had zero complications with food and fluids. I had my follow up appointment two weeks ago, saw the nutritionist first, she had me increase my protein by an ounce. I waited for the surgeon and he was over an hour late seeing me and I had to leave to go to work so I wasn’t even able to ask him why I feel nothing. I’m afraid 6 months down the road I won’t be in the mindset I am now and will start to eat more. Was wondering if anyone else felt the same after bypass. I’m pretty frustrated.

I feel the same way. I was really hoping to have the hunger go away but it never did. I was cleared for regular foods and we went to a diner. I ordered a cup of chili and it seemed a little greasy but I was really hungry so I ate it anyway. I even ate 2 saltine crackers. No problem at all. I think it was probably about a cup (8 oz). I got home and about an hour later I felt hungry!!! I just cannot believe how easily I can tolerate anything I've tried. I'd really love to know from people 6 month plus who were like this...did you lose weight?? I mean is this a sign that it wont work?? Ive lost 20 or so pounds but I feel like thats not much at this stage.

You must have got the same model pouch as Fluffy Chix, hers is very cast Iron, gave her hardly any trouble. Gosh I wish mine had been the same instead of a more tempermental model but Precious and I will still make our peace. Just had my 2 oz of pureed down "Not so Sloppy :sloppy Joe mix with lean meat. And I think she is going to accept it, happy 6 month Surgiversity to us both. Yeah Tomato isn't the easiest thing to handle but if you could do it, Hurray for us both! Going to wait more than 30 minutes to drink anything just in case. See my path has had briars, bumps and twists to,it, in some respects I am 6 months , in others 3 maybe 4 but I will get there to the finish line🚕I'm a jalopy where many of you younger ones are Ferraris, Like the old time Timex Watch commercial " I take a lickin' and keep on tickin': so I guess I'll still be okay.Talked to one of my bariatric nurses today, told me to stop having "diet envy",that I am still doing just fine, maybe I am slower through stages but I have a great weight loss to show for things, can't compare oranges and apples, but sometimes I feel like a gnarled old crabapple. But maybe God likes all kinds of fruit in his Garden,yeah I LIKE that thought! And your restriction may hit in other ways, if not you're still doing your thing, just your way! My Proud moment, down to 242 from surgery weight of 319, n9w that I think is Good! But it has been in fits and spurts although I never really have stalled. Remember, a jalopy, that's me. I guess I chug a chug along.

Yeah I don't have very much restriction and for me, chilli is a bit of a slider food. Try some firm, dense Protein, eg 4 oz of chicken breast or prawns to gauge whether you have any level of restriction. You might find you really need to concentrate on the firm protein.

Also make sure you really work on slowing your eating because the satiety signals take about twenty minutes to kick in. Then assess whether your meal has affected your hunger. If after twenty minutes or so you find you feel satisfied on firmer protein rather than softer foods like chilli, you'll know where you get the most "bang for your satiety buck"

Hi!

The dryer and denser the Protein (or vegetables) the more you will feel the desire to stop eating as you approach fullness or boredom.

Slider foods can be healthy & still too high calorie and eating past the slight signs/signal of your restriction is completely possible. Watch out for that down the road.

The stomach/sleeve/pouch eventually empties and you could be refilling it during that time as well if you are eating for too long a period

Discuss with your team when you get the chance

Yeah. I think this is pretty common in RNY surgeries? Much more common than in VSGs. Wish I'd known that at the start, I would have pushed for a different surgery. I feel y'alls pain!

So here are your tips that help--and @GreenTealael and @ummyasmin touched on both:

1. The denser and drier the Protein the better. Grilled or pan sauteed single Proteins such as: chicken breast, turkey cutlets, oily fish like salmon, dense fish like cod, shrimp/scallops, lean pork, lean beef first (3-4oz cooked).

2. Separate veggie cooked al dente, the more fibrous the better: broccoli, broccolini, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, asparagus, sauteed greens.

3. Avoid complex carb cuz you will be able to eat way too much of it.

4. Avoid casseroles, calorie dense soups/sides/mains cuz you can eat way too much of it.

5. Concentrate on low calorie, densely nutritious proteins and low glycemic veg to make up about 90% of your meals, about 90% of your time. Eat slowly. Water load up to 15 minutes before a meal then don't drink again for about 90 minutes. Then start watering your pouch consistently until it's time to water load before the next meal. Do NOT drink with your meal!

Same. I can eat more items like Soups, casseroles, Pasta dishes, etc. I always feel more restriction if I start with dense Protein or eat a salad with say chicken or shrimp on it.

I do find as I am now 15 months out I can certainly eat a bit more than I could a year ago, but this is normal. You may also find on some days you can eat more than others, days I can eat less are “small pouch” days.

If you are someone that had an overeating problem before surgery...eating until feeling very full and stuffed, you will not feel that type of fullness now. Once I start to feel disinterested in my meal that is a sign I am done, if I keep eating I hiccup once, which means my pouch is done.

I have tolerated all foods...it does NOT mean you will not lose your weight so do not despair.

I feel very much the same way now. I did have issues with restrictions in the beginning and had the foamies a couple of times, once at work even. Now I feel like I can eat anything but I do notice a pain in my left side sometimes when i'm getting full - I know darn well I could eat through that pain, and have, but the fear of failing after having major surgery gives me enough will power to put the fork down...finally. Last month I did eat two slices of dijorno pep pizza and had zero issue, after I ate my P3 Protein pack for dinner. The next morning that cold pizza looked good and after three bites it hit me and took 20 minutes for the pain to go away. My neighbor is 8 years out on his RNY and he has to remember to eat - not me, I'm still thinking about food all the time.

I think everyone has a different signal, recently I've started hiccuping when full, then I found a thread here about people doing the same thing so maybe you need to listen more for your body telling you to stop? I'm really hoping that the hunger goes away because if it doesn't the only tool i'm left with is malnutrition.

Thanks everyone- I am very strict with the Water rule- even tried an hour before and after but will try the 90 minutes as suggested. I was hoping I’d be one of those “omg I took 4 bites and was stuffed” success stories or at least hiccups, burps or nasal drainage, but I have nothing. I’m still down 40 pounds so I’m following the rules right. I appreciate everyone’s feedback!!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
