KC77 20 Posted March 1, 2019 Hello all, I am curious, I am diabetic and will have my Sleeve surgery on April 25th. I am wondering how the surgery effected those that are diabetic. Were you able to get off of medication/insulin? if so, how long did it take for you to not need any meds?

Were you able to get off of medication/insulin? if so, how long did it take for you to not need any meds?Hi KC. I was type II diabetic. I was only on medication, no insulin. I left the hospital no longer needing medication. My husband was also diabetic, on insulin and a few different meds. He had the bypass. He was able to also leave the hospital no longer needing insulin or meds. FLHappyGirl 171 Posted March 1, 2019 I was type 2. The only med I was on was metformin but getting close to being on others. I can't even remember but at most I took my metformin for a day or two (seems like a life time ago) and my sugars have been normal ever since. Best of luck! 3 DanaC84, ProudGrammy and Wanda247 reacted to this

I'm a well controlled type one. I hardly ever use insulin. 3 DanaC84, ProudGrammy and Wanda247 reacted to this
nenes78 528 Posted March 1, 2019 I was on 2 meds prior to surgery. After surgery the one was stopped and the other cut in half, and then stopped all together one month after surgery. Good luck 👍 2 ProudGrammy and DanaC84 reacted to this
DanaC84 1,116 Posted March 1, 2019 I have type 2 or had even though medically they won’t say cured but in remission. I was on metformin twice a day and trulicity once a week. I stopped all when I went on my liquid pre op diet. I’m due for my A1C next month but my morning #’s are about 115 last time I tested. MIKE P 7 Posted March 1, 2019 I had surgery on the 13th of Feb and they told me not to take my insulin( i take two different shots for a total of 4 per day) my sugar has been down around 110 in testing. hoping i can keep it in that range forever. my primary doc told me to monitor it and if the numbers start to elevate later we will have to look at the options. Good luck and i hope it works well for you 2 MrsGamgee and DanaC84 reacted to this
gabybab 696 Posted March 1, 2019 I'm type 2 & take metformin, glimeperide and Lantus at night. My bs is running 200 in the morning taking nothing. Trying to work with my endo to figure out what to do. Surgery was Monday and so I'm still healing. Taking in mo calories and Dr sent me home with liquid meds, with sugar. Go figure. 2 DanaC84 and MrsGamgee reacted to this
Wanda247 908 Posted March 1, 2019 I was taken off metformin and victoza immediately after surgery and my blood sugars are normal. I hardly eat carbs though. 3 MrsGamgee, BigWill619 and kjoz66 reacted to this
NorthCountryGirl 9 Posted March 2, 2019 I was on Kombiglyze, Farxiga and Basaglar before surgery. I was able to stop all medication while in the liquid phase but sugars crept back up after I started soft foods and until now. I’m now almost 8 weeks out and back on just Basaglar once daily. So I cut out 2 meds and my A1C is down from 8.9 in November to 7.4 this week. Progress! 2 MrsGamgee and Wanda247 reacted to this
MarkLewis 21 Posted March 4, 2019 I was on Metformin and left the hospital without taking any meds again (been 15 weeks). My sugars are routinely in the mid-70's in the morning. I might need to eat a few more carbs... 3 Wanda247, MrsGamgee and Frustr8 reacted to this
geets 44 Posted April 22, 2019 I was type2 for 20yrs before gastric bypass July 2017. Nearly 2 yrs later I’m still on metformin. I’m down to 66kg (145lbs) from 98kg (198lbs). Getting rid of the diabetes was the main factor in having a gastric bypass procedure. Feeling disheartened, I’m vegetarian and therefore have Beans and lentils (carbs) for my Protein uptake. Anyone in the same situation?

I've had diabetes for 15 years or so. I'm now down to 10 units 9f lantus at night. I take glimeperide only if my Breakfast or dinner bs is over 180. I'm pleased my numbers are in the 140 range and this morning was 121. They were terribly high the first month out.
anl1990 91 Posted April 22, 2019 I don't know if I will be any help, but I was/am pre-diabetic. Going into the surgery, I took medication. My surgeon told me I was able to stop taking the medication following surgery - however, I also take Lisinopril, and was told to stay on it. I will be seeing my primary doctor in May, and will be getting blood work done before then. I will find out from her what I should do from here on out, as far as if I can discontinue all medication, keep doing what I am doing, etc. Best of luck, I hope this is able to help you with yours! Wanda247 908 Posted May 7, 2019 ***UPDATE*** I had blood work done for the second time since having surgery back in August 29th 2018 and I am soooo ecstatic! I Got me blood work results yesterday from my PCP and My A1C is 6.0. Before surgery it was out of control 9.7, after surgery my endocrinologist took me off all diabetic meds (I was taking 1500 mg of metformin and the highest dosage of Victoza and felt sick every day) three months after surgery A1C went down to 6.7, now 9 months it's 6.0. My main reason for having wls was to get better control of my diabetes. The sleeve is working great for me and I'm so happy that I had it done. 3 MrsGamgee, BigWill619 and FLHappyGirl reacted to this
