I was bypassed on dec 3, 2018 and had two glasses of wine about 8 weeks post op. Definitely had a buzz (I was a weekend drinker prior) and I am having a few glasses in the weekend. I have a very social life and am dating and I make sure to work out, drink plenty of Water and stay on food plan. I’m not giving up my wine and I have tolerated it as well as everything else 100% just fine. Don’t even feel like I’ve had surgery.

I waited about 5 months. I’m nearly 9 months out and have drank about 4 times. For me, if my stomach is empty, alcohol will hit me really quickly and a little goes a long way. Now granted, it’s been a few years since I was a regular drinker, so my tolerance hasn’t been high for awhile... but yeah, strongly recommend pacing yourself to get a handle on what your tolerance is.

I never drank and drove before- out of an abundance of safety- but I can 100% say that post-surgery, I do not/should not drive even after just one drink. So please be careful!

I am almost 5 months out. At 4 months out I tried a rum and coke. Could only drink 1/2 of it cause of the soda being so filling. A week later I drank a whole wine cooler! I was surprised that it seemed to hit me about normal. I was so worried about being super sensitive to it. I had heard to stay away from it for about a year due to the empty calories, sensitivity change and transfer addiction possibility. Sounds like there is a huge variety of experiences with it. Good topic.

So I tried my first drinks and I thought I was going to feel the alcohol after my first or second drink but that wasn’t my case .. I ordered Water with vodka and the bartenders looked at me like I was crazy lol

My first drink was 2 months out. Drinking is really interesting for me now. I get super tipsy after only half a glass and will stay that way until about 15 minutes after I finish the drink - I sober up just as quickly. My friends think its hilarious, its like a party trick to them!

Lol I’m also 2 months out !! And I don’t get tipsy quick I mean yeah quicker than before I had surgery but not as quick as most Bariatric patients .. maybe because i get a cup of Water with a shot of vodka inside? Not sure lol

So I am 10 weeks now and have tried a few different drinks at different times ....

white wine- i can have a full glass and it does nada but makes me tired (so that is out)

red wine- one glass and I am definitely tipsy but also tired

i had one truly spiked seltzer ( i know it's not the best cuz it is carbonated but I did let it get pretty darn flat)- this was my favorite drink i have tried but also made me tired

last night i had vodka/water with extra lemon- this was my go to drink before wls anyway - one shot of vodka in a really really big glass of Water and a glass of water on the side and i add more water as I go. got a little tipsy quicker than any of the other drinks and TIRED after...like so so so tired. And thirsty as hell today and I drink a lot of water normally

So the moral of the story for me is that alcohol makes me so damn tired and I won't be drinking regularly or anytime soon again. I hate feeling exhausted tired like that.

I had a shot at about 12 weeks post sleeve. (I was traveling and it was a group celebration thing). It instantly hit me. Like insta drunk I could see the world shift and feel it hit my blood stream.

After that it’s been a few schooners or less that I don’t finish here and there. I wasn’t a big drinker before and even less now.

I’m not a drinker

I waited two months and I have found sometimes it hits me harder and sometimes my tolerance is high and I don’t feel it... not sure why that is but I love my wine.

I waited about 6 weeks till I was on solid foods and tried red wine. I got, and still do get, a very warm sensation in my stomach. I tried Champagne about 4 months post-op. That is my favorite. I can usually get away with one glass, but not always. I get super buzzy with just a few sips. I don't do liquor anymore and I certainly stay away from anything with sugar. Rose and whites tend to not go down well so I stay away from those also.

Pretty funny I get trashed immediately and people around me think I’m nuts! This starting happening after my surgery with any alcohol!

I am almost a full 7 years post op. Since we aren't supposed to have carbonated beverages with bypass I haven't...but I have had mixed drinks...it hits me super quick....I get really really buzzed....and move to Water and sober up pretty quickly. I don't really care for Alcohol regardless but I tried it and it hits me quick personally

Melissa W I’m out 19 years post op and I still get trashed and if I do a shot I can’t even walk for 15 minutes.. people who are now getting the surgery have to be careful and not drink alone it can be a problem!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
