How do I know I'm not being impulsive?

Recommended Posts

I don’t think you sound impulsive. Even if you were, the process to get surgery can be frustrating and long. I’ve been considering surgery for five years at least. Only now that my insurance changed is it a possibility for me. I went to a seminar with the surgeon in December, had to reschedule my intake appointment in February, and probably won’t get surgery until June once Ive jumped through all the hoops, and that’s without a 6 month supervised diet. I think that being active in communities like this, discussing your plans with your doctor, and making any changes you can ahead of surgery is a good way to gauge your level of commitment. I wish you all the best with whichever option you choose.

I made my consultation appointment just a day or two after deciding I wanted bariatric surgery. I still had 3 weeks before the appointment to do more research, which just solidified my decision. I'm about halfway through the process right now, hoping to have surgery this summer.

I don't think you're being impulsive. I had a moment in mid August where I just had it with my weight. WLS was never ever an option in my mind prior to that point. It was something drastic and invasive "other" people did who had no self control. And yet I have been on some kind of diet every year for the past 15+ years and I was steadily approaching 300 lbs. I knew I had to do something. I simply couldn't do it on my own anymore. I knew in my heart I had exhausted all options. I tried every diet known to man. I called the surgeons office that afternoon and had my 1st seminar with the hospital 2 weeks from that date and my 1st consult with him 2 weeks after that. My insurance required me to jump through hoops so I had 4 months to think about it and research. I read every article, the pros and cons, watched YouTube videos and lurked message boards to get the full picture of what I was signing myself up for. If I paid out of pocket my surgeon would have been able to do my surgery within 4-6 weeks from 1st consultation with him. I was annoyed with the 4 month supervised dieting process because as someone said above, I've been dieting most of my whole life! Lol. But I rolled with the punches and I am currently 6 days post-op and feel this already is the best decision I've ever made. If you have exhausted all options, remain unhappy with your weight, unhappy with the state of your health due to your weight, did your research and desire a healthier happier you...go for it! I'm so glad I didn't wait and got the process going as soon as I did.

This sounds exactly how I came to looking into bariatric surgery, I had never really thought of it as an option before

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
