Dr. Ponce of Georgia. This article was done quite awhile back. David is a member of Smartbandsters Yahoo Group and has done very well with his band. He also works for USA Today. It's got some good answers in it.

Leatha this was great encouragment for me. Reading this mans story shows the band is a great success along with alot of hard work from ourselves. I hope to get my band soon and I think when I do seeing success stories like this will help me be ever so grateful that I have a band on myside. THANKS!!!

Midnite

Every Dr. has their own post op diet they want you to follow. One thing I was told by Dr. Ortiz is that when Inamed came out with the band they had no post op diet so every Dr. and his nurtitionalist made up their own. My Dr. has a longer post op liquid phase then most. 2 weeks Clear Liquids, 1 week full liquids at week 4 was mushy food for 2 weeks then solids at week 6.

Not many here have I heard of them having 3 weeks of liquids.

He also may have had a pre op diet to follow, more so in men who have a higher BMI and have more fat around their livers some Dr's require liquids pre band to shrink the size of the liver, it is easier to place the band that way.

thanks leatha, lots of great things for hubby to read, or make that DH, as I read here! Great article! I like how HE is in charge of making the most of the band. It's not a cure, but a tool that makes your efforts work for you. Good read!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
