1 day post op and not hungry

Recommended Posts

Hello,

how did you guys handle post op. They want me to have 90 grams of Protein and 90 grams of Fluid a day so far I think I’ve had 8oz of fluid. I’m not really sure how they expect me to drink 90. Does anyone have any tips or advice thanks

Full liquids already? A lot of post op diets have a few days clear liquid in the days immediately following the op. Also initially only 60gms of protien and 60oz of fluids. Perhaps recheck your post op guidelines just to be sure. Also do you have any contact with a support group from your dr's surgery/clinic to see how they managed with such guidelines so soon after surgery.

You want to fill in your profile so people can see what surgery type you had, it helps when responding to questions you may have.

Your guidelines are goals to work up to. No one is drinking 90 oz of Water and having 90 grams of Protein the day after surgery.

Immediately after surgery, focus on your Fluid intake to avoid dehydration. Keep water by you to sip. If you are allowed warm broth, sugar free popsicles and the like then that counts too. Sip small amounts of Protein Shakes if you tolerate them.

Each day you will slowly be able to sip more and you will progress through your stages.

I found that instead of trying to drink from a big cup pour 2 ounces into a shot glass or smaller cup. then put a 10 minute timer on with a goal to finish the cup in 10 minutes. I did this 2-3 times and hour, then just sipped on Water in between then focused again on getting 2 ounces in over 10 minutes. Today is day 5 and I have already hit 40g Protein and 30oz of fluids. Also my doctor counts the shakes into the total fluids (even the yogurt counts towards Fluid ounces). I also found that reclining in bed and trying to drink didn't work well. I needed to be sitting straight up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
