Rene' S 14 Posted February 21, 2019 I had surgery 2-18. My discharge papers say I have to wait a month because of the surgery. That they are less effective, anyone heard this?Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

They said you need to use another form for awhile. Probably best to ask a ob/gyn.

It's mostly a safety precaution so you don't develop a blood clot post surgery. I had to go off the pill prior to surgery too.
chellyvillen 21 Posted March 8, 2019 I was on the pill and was told I had to go off - I switched to an IUD
KateBruin 344 Posted March 9, 2019 I refused to go off. I need to stay on the pill. It’s to prevent DVT. I just made sure to walk a lot to prevent clots. It also depends on your weight. I think the higher it is the more likely you should go off BC temporarily. I believe I’ve also read it can be less effective short term after surgery but don’t quote me on that. I’m currently not sexually active 🤦🏼♀️ so it was never a concern.
CR0610 11 Posted March 9, 2019 I’m fixed but need my birth control to control bleeding. They told me to stop it and of course the flow came I’m so upset. I don’t want to worry about this on top of my healing

I don’t want to worry about this on top of my healing I stayed on BC but the stress on my body was so bad I got my period the night of surgery. Asking the nurse to change my gigantic pad on mesh undies was a real experience. It sucked having to deal with pads and the incision pain but I did it. nomdeplume 36 Posted March 10, 2019 I was told the same thing. I had to wait a month before starting the pill again. My surgeon explained that it was to prevent any possible blood clots. During surgery, they gave me some kind a medication that interfered with my birth control. Due to that, two days after leaving the hospital, Aunt Flow came for an extended visit. My periods have been wonky ever since. I suffer from menorrhagia, so with the pill no longer doing what it was supposed to, I switched to an IUD last month. I couldn't take it anymore.
