Surgery Tomorrow! 12 hours no food/drink :(

Recommended Posts

Hi there! So I was informed today that I need to be at the hospital tomorrow evening at 12noon for my surgery. However I cannot eat/drink after midnight. That's 12+ hours with no food/drink! Is this normal? What can I do to help me out?

I plan to go to work tomorrow morning to stay busy, thinking that it may help keep my mind off of wanting to eat/drink however I'm thinking it may be easier to sleep through it in the morning then head to the hospital. What worked for you?

Starting at midnight you're not allowed? I think if you sleep for 8 hours and then get up and go to work then you'll only be going 4 hours without eating and drinking. I don't know if that's actually how long you sleep but 4 hours seems a lot shorter of a period if you think about it like that.

That's a great way of looking at it, now that you say it like that. Thanks!
I'm jus used to Breakfast and coffee. But my nerves will probably aid in me not being hungry either.

It went well everyone. Freaking out over nothing. I was thinking about the number 12, not taking into consideration I slept 6 hours of that, then got up and went to work to further keep myself occupied. I'm now entering day1 post-op. Thanks everyone for your encouraging words!

I am glad that you are doing well and that you are recovering smoothly. How long did the surgery take?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
