Surgery after RNY- no protein powder no vitamins???

Recommended Posts

I was just told that prior to my upcoming surgery (non rny related) that I need to be off all Vitamins and no Protein Powder for a week. Will I have issues with this? She said the vitamins can interfere with anesthesia and the pp can mess it up as well. I'm about 3.5 months out of rny surgery. My bloodwork for vitamins done at 3 months were all good. She said if I felt bad I could take them again but stop 3 days before. BUT on the surgery paperwork it said to not stop taking vitamins (only stop fish oil) if you are a gbp person. I didnt read the packet until I got home or I would have asked for clarification. Anyone have any advice about this?

Call your surgeon's (bariatric) + other surgeon to discuss this.

I already have. I get different opinions from everyone. I have my actual bariatric surgeon and also my new bariatric surgeon (because my insurance changed I see a new one for follow up care) and they have opposite opinions regarding Protein powder in general. Old one says it is fine to use and new said omg don't use it at all, just eat meat. Due to kidney issues I can only eat 6oz of meat a day and my portions are still around 3/4 cup to 1 cup (depending on food) 3 times a day. The kidney surgeon suggested eating cauliflower for protein. I told him the protein wasn't high enough and he googled it in front of me and saw that you need to eat a full cup of cauliflower for 2g protein. I typically use the pp mixed in food or as a Meal Replacement not as added protein. I just wanted to hear if anyone else has experience with other surgeries after bypass.

Thank you. I think they drilled it in to my head successfully to make sure to always take my supplements so I was getting a little panicky about not taking them for this week.

You'll be fine for a week. I had to stop my Calcium for a bit and change it entirely due to kidney stones and went without all Vitamins for 2 weeks because of surgery

What is your Calcium plan? Not being nosy I just have had so much conflicting info about taking calcium or not post kidney stones. From surgeons and doctors and specialists and dietitians, I dont even know which advice to follow.

So my calcium plan personally is 1000mg of calcium 3 weeks of the month then take a week off. It has to only be the calcium citrate with d. Because any other formula causes kidney stones

Thank you so much for posting this. I have had a history of kidney stones and am in the process of planning to get SADI-S procedure done in about 1 month (now that all testing is finally done and cleared) and was doing a ton of research of how citrate bonds the calcium so that it doesn't bind with any oxalates and cause stones. The calcium citrate is found to cause it's own stones but are VERY dissolvable and do not harden like the oxalates do which cause bad kidney stones. I really like the 3 weeks on, 1 week off cycle!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
