Pre-op diet working?

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 days into my pre-op diet (surgery 2/25!) And I'm just curious how do you know if your pre-op diet does what it's supposed to? Has anyone had any issues surgery day of your liver being too large?

I didn't have any signs that it was working or it didn't. I lost a good amount of weight during it and my doctor told me they wouldn't really know until were in there. If my liver was still too large they would back out of the surgery mid procedure and if it was fine they would proceed which they did proceed so it worked!

I have the same surgery date! I was told no pre-op diet, but I gained 7 pounds and my Dr says I have to do a 7 day shake diet. I start on Monday. I hope it helps achieve whatever needs to happen. Best of luck on your surgery!

Awesome! 7 days isn't too bad. All shakes? I have 3 shakes a day, raw vegetables and one "meal" a day. Thanks! Same to you!

No, I couldn't tell, I just followed directions and my liver wasn't too large on the day of surgery and everything was fine.

You really don't, though some weight loss is a good sign, it isn't conclusive. We had one gal here last year whose doc did back out and close her up even after several weeks (if not months) of his prescribed diet (presumably followed, but you never know....)

The most reliable method is to find a surgeon who knows how to work in there irrespective liver condition and doesn't prescribe any pre-op diet (they're out there, but you have to ask around and look for them.)

Just follow all the directions they give you. If you cheat or eat something you’re not suppose to then it won’t do what they need it to do. Remember this is the start of a life style change so commit to the plans they have for you so you can be successful long term. You can do it! It will get easier!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
