Smell some rubbing alcohol. That's what they did for me in the hospital. Or suck on a peppermint disc.

Is that a pill?

Yes. You can get them in the same isle at the store as the stuff for heartburn. It’s usually in the bottom shelf. They come in chewable or regular.

Thank you guys! I will try both .. I’m one week out and I have so much nausea, I feel like throwing up but I haven’t. It makes me not want to eat anything.. even the smell of food makes me feel sick

My dr gave me a script for zofran before I was even discharged. If the OTC doesn’t do the trick I’d consider calling your surgeon.

Zofran is great because it doesn’t make you drowsy like the others. Also breathe through your mouth until the nausea passes. Slow breathes.

Does anyone know what can help with nausea?

I drink plain peppermint tea, no sugar added. It helps me a lot or you can cut a lemon in half and squeeze some of the juice in your mouth, or lick on it (weird I know LOL) I get that from my mom, I keep it in a small ziplock bag in my purse.

I ended up needing zofran as well. The peppermint tea is the only thing that kept me from not being dehydrated. The sight or smell of anything made me gag!

and the lemon didn’t irritate your stomach ? How far out were you when you did the lemon ?

I been trying ginger tea, the peppermint one sounds good! That’s how I feel!! Even any smell makes me gag !!!

I had an increased sense of smell as well. Very similar to each of my pregnancies. But I’ve not noticed it quite as bad now. (I’m a little over 3 weeks out)

Has anyone had nausea for an extended period (like months) after surgery, or is it generally a short-term thing right after surgery?

I had gastric bypass on Jan 16 and I am still nauseous. It is getting better but it’s still there! My surgeon said it will all get better just give it time. I am praying everyday for it to all be over!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
