So far so good

Recommended Posts

RNY on 2/5, went home early on 2/6. Haven’t taken pain meds since 2/6. I have no pain and no nausea. I want to ask if I could be causing an issue. When my surgeon’s office called on Friday to check on me she kept asking if I was gulping Water. I’m not taking gulps but I have been taking small sips in a row which probably equals a gulp. I haven’t had any issues from this. I think I have been very fortunate so far. I’m not having any hunger or head hunger yet (I know it will come eventually). Just want to make sure I’m not causing any pouch damage I’m not aware of.

It sounds like you are doing it right. You will feel pain if you are drinking too fast. Water goes right through the pouch and into your intestine pretty quick so if you are sipping back to back you are getting lots of water in and that makes everything work better. Drink water and take short walks frequently and you will make a perfect recovery. I still haven't got the eating part down but I get my Protein in.

I had the sleeve, but ED is correct, you will feel pressure in your sternum if you eat or drink too fast.. and then you will sit until it goes away.. small slow sips wins the race.. I still catch myself now at 3 months out drinking too fast.. at 3 sips back to back.. i kind hold the liquid in my mouth LOL.. to give it a small rest.

You'll know it if you gulp Water. It WILL HURT! I am 6.5 weeks post-op rny and only now can take swallows, rather than sips, but NO GULPING because I know the pain it causes. I've noticed that if I take my regular swallows too close together, it can hurt. If you are just sipping and even sipping back-to-back, you are doing fine. I have found my gulp mistakes have been made when I have been distracted (same thing with eating mistakes). If there are people around and I am in a conversation or in front of a screen, it is very easy to forget our present selves and revert back to old behaviors and boy, do we pay for it! That's when I am in danger of gulping my fluids or eating foods too fast. Suffering soon follows to remind us of our new self and the changes we've made and are making. We must also change our default, non-thinking mode by consistent practice so we eventually no longer revert back to our old selves. Happy losing, my dear! 🙂

Hello 5th Buddies. I had my bypass on the 5th and things have been so surprisingly great. Got discharged immediately the next morning. Getting in the Water and Protein. Doing homemade broths and tolerating them. I have my first play op appointment tomorrow. Not even in pain which I am surprised by that. I have more knee pains than surgery pains from walking lol. Stay pumped everyone. The honeymoon is in full effect and let’s make the most out of it. I am sure they’re tougher days ahead but enjoy the ride.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
