Losing weight before surgery

Recommended Posts

My insurance wants me to be at or below my starting weight before they will approve me for the surgery. I started at 293 and I am currently 305. I have been struggling to lose the weight. Low carbs, working out, even joined WW.

Does anyone have this problem? Any suggestions?

Track what you are eating. You are going to have to track after surgery. Sometimes we may not eat a whole lot but foods high in carbs and/or fat. Your daily caloric intake should be below 2000 to start losing. If you can keep your caloric downt o 1500 you will start losing quickly, I would start tracking what you are eating.

WW and Low Carb are total opposites. Whole they both work, it has to be one or the other and not both otherwise it isnt going to work. I have done both of these diets prior to surgery.. They both work but you really have to decide if you want to give up anything or just reduce what you eat.

Good luck on your journey!

Do you already track what you eat? I use MyFitnessPal.com and it's very helpful to make sure I'm not overeating. Also, you could try doing a 1500 calorie/day diet like I did before the sleeve surgery for two weeks and I lost weight from that, so maybe you will too.

Before you even think about putting something to eat in your mouth, drink 8-10 ounces of Water and wait 10 minutes. Make sure you are getting in 64 ounces of water a day. Track EVERYTHING. Get moving - walk around the block - do something. If you drink water, stay low carb and are honest in tracking everything you should lose. (PS - throw out all the crap that might be tempting you in your pantry - if it's not in the house, you can't eat it.)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
