Nausea and different taste buds HELP!

Recommended Posts

Please let me know that this too shall pass!

I had bypass on Jan 16th and now I am having the worst nausea ever! I’m also having an issue with everything tasting nasty! I’m currently taking anti nausea meds but its not working much for me. I’m sooooo sad and frustrated please tell me that this too will pass!

BTW, my surgeon told me it will get better but I’m having my doubts.😞

It will definitely get better. I was sleeved on 10/25/18 and dealt with extreme nausea and taste changes too. One thing I learned to do was drink my Water regardless of how I felt. If Vitamins are bothering you then you can try vitamin patches. Gas, discomfort, nausea, vomiting and irritation are part of the healing process but its worth it. It will get better just hang in there. Oh and please follow the diet take your time.

Taste changes seem to be pretty common. Things taste too sweet, artificial sweeteners taste artificial, milk tastes too milky, my regular tea doesn’t taste the same etc.

I also find that tastes change from day to day and week to week. Things I wa happy. to have in week 1 e.g Powerade zero I have no interest in now.

I developed very bad lactose intolerance about a week after surgery. It went away after a month or two. My smells are still messed up - lots of things smell like popcorn to me for whatever reason - and it's not like I loved or hated it beforehand. I have yet to find a drink that I like the taste of, but I've found that the further out I go, the more the wierdness goes away.

Sometimes I feel like what Pregnant women have told me - their tastes and smells are wacko. Bottom line though, it will pass, just give it time. Work with it and not against it. If "X" doesn't work, then try "Y", but do so very slowly and keep your nutritionist aware of what you are doing because they can be a Huge help. For me, unflavored isolated whea was all I could use to get in Protein during my out-of-nowhere lactose intolerance.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
