Not lovin' the band - so far

Recommended Posts

Well, I just did some research and found that Babs is right, muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. That really sucks. But anyways muscle burns more calories than fat. Get off the scale and get the tape measure out for a week or two. Believe me it will show a difference, don't go on pants size either, I have lost 25lbs and have not really gone down a pants size, but my upper torso is slimming up.

This is not correct. A pound of muscle weighs as much as a pound of fat, A POUND. BUT that being said, muscle is less bulky. It takes less of it to weigh a pound.

Actually - muscle DOES weigh more than fat. 1 cup of fat will weigh less than one cup of muscle. Or in other term - 1 cubic inch of muscle is more weighty than one cubic inch of fat.

Here is a quote from fitness.gov: The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports - Publications

People who exercise appropriately increase lean body mass while decreasing their overall fat level. Depending on the amount of fat loss, this can result in a loss of inches without a loss of weight, since muscle weighs more than fat. However, with the proper combination of diet and exercise, both body fat and overall weight can be reduced.

That being said - One pound of feathers weighs the same as one pound of lead. It is just still one pound. But the lead is more dense... so 1 cup of lead weighs more than one cup of feathers.

Make sense?

Muscle and fat do the same thing - one is more dense than the other and therefore can and does weigh more than the other. Which is why muscle weighs more than fat. As you can see from the excerpt above - my point is indeed correct.

Let me give yet another description - I am 5' 5" tall. At 165lbs I wear a size 5/6 in pants/skirts/shorts. I can bench 210lbs and am very defined. My identical twin sister weighs the same, but wears a size 12/14/16 pants depending on the brand. She can bench 85lbs. She is larger because she has more mass than I do because my muscle takes up less space - but we weigh the same.

By the way - the first part about me - is true (pre-kids) ... the second part was for illustration - my sister and I are not twins (even though we get asked it a lot)... our body types are different, height same... bone structure different (I have a 2" elbow measurement, hers is 1.5 inches) I am big boned, she is not.

AND before anyone says anything- yes - there are truly people who are big boned out there who carry their weight differently than those who have a petite frame.

Just thought I would share that bit of info... :)

Hope that clears up any confusion.

Amy

Hi! I was banded on Oct. 24 and the last couple of weeks I have not lost a lb. Finally I lost 1.5 # and am down a total of 32.5#. I am eating very little, maybe 500 calories/day. Am exercising though I could do more. It is hard for me to get in my liquids and am lucky to drink 8 cups/day. Now I am premenstrual and feel bloated and very hungry!!!!!!!! I get my first fill Dec. 12 and am worried it is not going to help. I really can't eat much regular food yet. Got chicken stuck yesterday, but it was dry. Very unpleasant! But we have to keep it up and the surgery should work. Keep in touch.

I am also about 3 1/2 weeks out from my surgery. I have my first fill Thursday the 29th. Thanksgiving was rough. I felt like I wanted to eat everything. I feel I find my self filling on soups....I think this might be bad for me. I just want to feel satisfied. I guess I need to figure out my head hunger and real hunger. I am now trying to stick with 3 meals a day and looking foward to my first fill. Thanks for all the information. This site is a blessing!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
