Worried Aetna will deny me

Recommended Posts

Aetna requires 2 years of severe obesity, which is 35+ BMI with co-morbitities or 40+ BMI without. I've only been at 40+ BMI for 14 months. Two years ago, my BMI was 36.5, and I didn't have any documented co-morbitities at the time. Though it hasn't been diagnosed yet, I probably have sleep apnea now because I snore pretty bad and didn't use to.

I have my first consultation in a week, but I'm afraid I'm going to go through all this and Aetna will just end up denying me. Can anyone else with Aetna shed some light on your approval/denial?

I understand your anxiety but you should go to your appointment focused on how surgery can help you NOW because of your health NOW. I'm linking a blog post I wrote which should give you some comfort (I hope). Aetna has played this sad, pathetic game for quite some time (as have many other payers) but you can't stress over it - just take care of yourself - prepare for the journey - and know that if they say "No" it isn't the end of the world. That answer isn't final - you can fight and you can win. Hopefully they do the right thing right away. Good luck and let me know if we can help. Aetna's "Two Year History" Denial Overturned

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
