Medication

Did anyone stop taking their medication a few days before their surgery ? When did you start taking them ? My dr told me to stop taking mine a few days before surgery. Most of the medication I take are capsules so just wondering how this affects you post op. Swallowing big capsules.

Usually medications/supplements promoting blood clotting and bleeding during or after surgery are stopped 2-3 weeks before surgery. These include low dose aspirin, Multivitamins containing Vitamins A, E, D, K, Iron. Also blood thinners like warfarin.

It's normal for a doctor to have you stop taking any medications a few days before surgery if they could cause increased post operative bleeding. That includes supplements like vitamins/herbs/etc.

After surgery, you may not be able to tolerate large pills. I was given pain medications as a capsule while I was still in the hospital. When I objected because I was concerned, the nurses and the doctor had no worries about a capsule.

If you're concerned and the medication in the capsule isn't time released, you can open the capsule and sprinkle it in food/drink and take it that way after your surgery until you feel you're healed enough to resume taking the capsule.

There was a list of medications that you had to stop taking before surgery, but none of my medications were on that list. Post-op, when I got home from the hospital on Day #3 I was able to swallow my pills and capsules just fine.

Okay so I am on iron supplements, multivitamins as well as B12. Guess I will have to discuss this with the surgeon. He never mentioned this. I guess I'm just really scared, as my date for surgery is approaching soon.

Yeah they took my Lasix and Potassium Chloride away because I am too much an dehyration risk. Made me stop Vitamins A and D but I'm back on D again and had to start Ferrocite, couldn't take over counter ones, those are Sulfate and RnYs don't have enough acid to use them so Ferrocite is a Fumerate salt of Iron.< /p>

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
