Pushing the next stage from liquid to purée

Recommended Posts

So I am seven days postop. I have eight more days that I am supposed to be on full liquids. I’m wondering how many people eat soft foods when they were supposed to be on full liquids. And do you consider hot cereals like Malto Meal acceptable at this stage? I know I need to stick to my doctors plan but I would like to know what others have done in terms of sneaking in some mushy foods while in this stage.

No doubt some people have pushed the boundaries, starting food stages early than they should.

Why not chat to your surgeon or dietician see if you can get the go ahead to move to the next stage? How would you feel if you jumped ahead too quickly for you, and compromised the healing of your stomach and bypass?

Do you really want to be sneaking in food at this stage? If you do it now, what about the next time and next time you feel you want to?

Somewhere down the track there will be time to tweak your food intake to suit you, but let that be when you have healed and have lost some weight.

I can only reinforce please chat to your medical team.

Don’t seek reassurance from strangers to advance your diet early.

You are an adult. Either call your team and ask or don’t and face your consequences.

What one person did could put someone else in the hospital, who knows.

I stayed on liquids the full 3 weeks and didn't want to push it because the surgery was a big deal and I didn't want to mess it up so quickly post-op. It's only another week, you can do it!

Yeah I’m going to stick to the full liquids. I am asking because some people have thinned Cereal etc and it’s allowable. I think I’ll just keep drinking the broth and tough it out till the full 15 days are over.

They gave me cream of wheat in the hosp after my surgery. I was told that was part of the liquid stage. Also cream Soups as long as they're strained so that you're not getting the chunks of chicken or mushrooms or whatever.

I also made very runny mashed potatoes one night, with Skim milk to add some Protein. Thinking about making that again with chicken broth added in.

At this point, yeah, I'm ready to lick a steak!!

Good luck!

Emailed the nutritionist today and she said hold off on any cereals, even if they’re thin. So I guess that’s that

It's good that you checked, you don't want to compromise your healing or weight loss.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
